Hysterectomy scheduled for 3.22.16 Feeling nervous
I am definitely ready to say goodbye to the intermittent bleeding, awful periods and constant bloated feeling and the never-ending soreness..but I do feel pretty nervous about what to expect. I am a pretty active busy person and feeling sidelined is going to drive me nuts. Can anyone tell me how bad the pain may be after a laprascopic and vaginal hysterectomy? Will it really be a full 7-10 days until I can get up and about for light activities?
TIA and Good luck to everyone

Re: Hysterectomy scheduled for 3.22.16 Feeling nervous
Hi Oneofeach to HysterSisters!
Pain after surgery is different for everyone. Some women report very little pain, while others report more to moderate. When you wake up from surgery, they will ask you how much pain you are in and will give you meds to match.
Recovery is also different for everyone. It depends on the type of surgery you are having, how fast you heal, and a myriad of unpredictable factors. But no matter how they enter your tummy, you will have much internal healing to do. You will not be bed ridden, but you will want to rest quite a bit. You will be doing brief, but frequent walks - these help you heal.
You will also be very tired. You need to think in terms of weeks and not days for recovery. You will be able to do minor items around the house, but you need to listen to your body carefully. You will also have lifting restrictions, typically 10 lbs for 6 weeks and 20 lbs for 8 weeks. You need to follow your doctors orders to the letter - both before and after your surgery.
Here is an article on Hysterectomy Recovery Time.
I had a TAH BSO. The pain was moderate, but controllable with narcotics and Motrin for the first 4 days. After that I was on only Motrin. I went back to work to a moderate stress desk job after 3 weeks, but could only do part time work for another 4 weeks. After that, I went back full time but no OT.
Keep in mind that you only get one chance to heal right.

Hysterectomy scheduled for 3.22.16 Feeling nervous
Hi I'm having the same surgery February 26.
After reading so many posts many say that waiting is the hardest part which can be difficult.
Every woman recovers differently. They say that's the average time.
I will do a follow-up post and I will let you know how my recovery goes.
Wishing you all the best! 😊

Dear Oneofeach,
Marestail is spot on to advise that you should think of recovery in terms of weeks - not days. This mindset is very important so that you are mentally prepared for the resting you will need to do.
Think of your downtime as a chance to read all those books and magazines you've missed. Plan on watching your favorite movies without guilt.
Here is a link to give you an idea of what "light housework" is considered after your hysterectomy:
What Housework/Light Activities Can I Do?
Hugs and best of luck on your upcoming surgery and a smooth recovery.
