scheduled for partial hysterectomy

I am scheduled for a partial hysterectomy on 9/04/2007. I am a bit nervous as this decision is final. I guess I still wanted an option for having another child. I am 40 years old and have one daughter. I had problems in my pregnancy that she totally flattened out my bladder and caused problems with me urinating. At any rate they recommended I don't have another child due to this. I also have endometriosis and was on the pill. I started getting headaches that lasted about 3 days every week and tried everything else and then had to stop the pill and my headaches subsided. Well, since being off the pill I have felt like I was having period cramps the whole month and then when my period came I was having a heavy flow and intense pain. Sharp, intense pain. So, as my doctor has recommended me doing this, I have opted to do this. I am at peace but know that I will always think about another child. So, what has been everyone's experience with a partial hysterectomy. I am just removing the uterus and leaving the ovaries and the cervix.

Thanks!

scheduled for partial hysterectomy

Hi Athenafdm127,

I also had a partial hyst - a LSH. I am still very pleased with the surgery results. It is nice to have a quality of life without fibroids and heavy periods.

Sending best wishes~

scheduled for partial hysterectomy

As far as I know I am having one done vaginally. I guess I am wondering on how long it will take to get back to normal and how long I can expect to be off work. I am planning two weeks. I don't do alot of lifting. How long do you have to wait to have sex after a vaginal partial hysterectomy? I don't know if I have to have lab work or not. I am getting a bit anxious about this.

Thanks for the response.

scheduled for partial hysterectomy

I had a TVH on July 31st. I went to my 2 week post-op appointment and the Dr. asked how I was feeling and I said like a new person. My only problem was from the catheter, had bladder spasms. I feel great and am having a hard time following Dr.'s orders about not doing anything. I really want to get back to exercising and am not allowed to do any cardio for six weeks. She said that I could start doing light walking now though. I wished I would have gone to the Dr. and had this surgery earlier. It is amazing how far they have come from the old hysterectomy surgeries. But, still can't have sex for six weeks. Hang in there and keep a positive attitude. I really believe that helps.

what is involved with a partial vaginal hysterectomy. No one told me anything about a catheter...I got the idea it was same day surgery and that it wouldn't take long to get back to normal. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it.

i had an lsh with just the body of my uterus removed and i'm thilled with the results. it sounds like you are not quite sure what you are having. i'm pretty sure your cervix will be removed if you are having a vaginal hysterectomy. someone can correct me if i'm wrong.
whatever way you do it, this is major surgery. you are having an organ or organs removed. please find out exactly what kind of hysterectomy you are having and do a lot of research.

Hi Athenafdm127,

I am replying again. I agree with Dressedupinblue. You might want to check with your Dr. If a vaginal hyst is done, the uterus and cervix are generally removed. The two types of hysts that leave the cervix are the SAH (Subtotal Abdominal Hyst) and the LSH (Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy).

It sounds like you might be haing a TVH, a LAVH or a TLH. Here is a Hyster Sisters link that goes over the different types of hysts. Also goes over recovery times.

In answer to your question, I had my LSH at an outpatient facility. Had surgery at 7:30 AM and I went home at 6:00 PM. I did have a catheter and it was only in during the afternoon after my hyst. Taken out before I went home.

Sending best wishes again~

yes, I am going to find out on Monday. After reading all the articles I am getting the impression that the cervix is coming out and I don't want that so I assume I will have a laproscopic one done. I want my ovaries and my cervix left. I am a nurse, but work with the geriatric population, I should have asked the questions but was a bit overwhelmed with the fact that I would not have kids anymore. I am ok with that but just finding out more about this surgery.
