Upcoming hysterectomy 2/2: So very terrified.. Help!!
Hello to all you wonderful ladies. I am a newbie here. My surgery is 2-2-16. I am terror stricken and that is not a joke! I am having a TLH with the tubes as well...keeping ovaries. I have a 4cm fibroid that has caused excessive bleeding and huge clots. I was on aygestin for a little over a month but had to stop taking it yesterday for surgery. It was obviously helping the bleeding because I stopped and since I quit taking it yesterday I am bleeding. I became anemic from heavy periods and had my levels back up so I hope I don't drop between now and Tuesday. Dr told me I could continue taking the aygestin indefinitely if it was working but it could stop working etc... I didn't really want to take a hormone for a very long time... I'm 45. So my only option was the hyst. I am terrified beyond measure. I am so scared of all the horror stories I have read and if being put to sleep! I want to be ok and wake up! I am not over weight, I am healthy otherwise.. Bp is a little high right now around 140/82 or so... I am just so very very afraid! Help!!!

Re: So very terrified.. Help!!
Hi,
I understand completely your fear and anxiety of your upcoming surgery. But I promise the anxiety before the procedure is truly the worst part. I had a LAVH on 12/31 with removal of uterus, cervix and tubes. I'm 45 as well and suffered from adenomyosis. Being put to sleep can be a scary thing, but try to find comfort knowing that for the drs. this is a routine surgery. Many women have come before you and there will be many women after you too. Recovery is somewhat difficult, but I think the first two days or so were the worst. I'm almost five weeks post op and some days are harder than others but each day I'm stronger. Try to do something fun for yourself before your surgery. Have a lunch with friends, ready your recovery space in your home, take in a movie, etc. And when you're surgery is over, we will all be here to welcome you to the other side. Everything will go as planned and just try to think about how much healthier having this surgery will make you. Best of luck on the 2nd, it will be just fine!!

Re: So very terrified.. Help!!
I know what you mean. I am 44. Due to weird allergies, I was unable to use birth control or any other meds to control the bleeding caused from my fibroids. I STILL put it off for a year!! LOL. Enough was enough and I just couldn't bleed anymore!!I had a Total laparoscopic hysterectomy on Jan 5. I am recovering well and can't believe I put it off as long as I did. Take a deep breath and keep in mind that your quality of life is going to be so much better!! Focus on the good. We will all be here for you after. You are NOT alone.

Re: So very terrified.. Help!!
I almost forgot to tell you why I was so afraid. Silly me..ha ha. My allergy is a common additive and preservative and found in every medication. I was so scared! I can't even use the electrolyte solution! I talked to my doctor and anesthesia and made the game plan ahead of time. They had preservative free meds ready for me and it all went well. They know what they are doing and know how to plan for every situation. Take a deep breath and focus on the relief you will have from your symptoms after.

I am trying to focus on the right things and some days are so much better than others. Some days I feel ready to go.. Others I want to cancel.

If there are no medical contraindications, ask your anesthesiologist (you can do this through your surgeon first; I got to talk to my anesthesiologist the night before the surgery) for a sedative when you are in the pre op area. I was so out of my mind with panic before my gall bladder surgery that my then-surgeon recommended it and I remembered to ask for it this time as well. It's added to your IV before they take you to the OR. And you remember nothing after it's administered except feeling relaxed. The only thing I remembered after getting it this time was the surgeon holding my hand in the OR right before the procedure. I wouldn't go under again without it. Good luck. We will be here for you when you're all done!

Re: So very terrified.. Help!!
I felt the same way until the morning of the surgery. I kept waiting for the panic to set in ( I am not ashamed to say I am a big chicken and really good at panicking ) but it never did. They also gave me a sedative that made me not care and I don't remember much after wheeling out of the room. What you are feeling is normal. It's a big deal!

I want to know that I am going to wake up and be ok. How can I get over this dibiltating panic? I did go to Victoria's Secret today and buy a new pair of really cute PJ's to wear while recovering!

Re: So very terrified.. Help!!
Deep breaths, practice seeing a positive outcome.... repeat a calming mantra whenever panic starts to overwhelm you. By the day of the surgery, you'll be past all of the panic because it will be a pretty much done deal.
The only thing left for you to do will be to have a nice sleep. And wake up with all of that worry behind you.
