I am curious if any of you had the choice to lose your uterus or not. I have a huge mass on each ovary and the doctor is pretty sure that one ovary is still working. I am going in to have the masses removed with the hopes that they are not cancerous. (The concern is there because I have elevated, but not indicative levels.)
If it so happens that the masses are not cancerous, but neither ovaries are fuctional, I have to choose whether I want to keep my uterus or not. I am not sure of this choice, but only have 1 and a half days left to figure it out!
From all that the Dr. said and from what I find online, there really is not a point to have it... unless I want to try to carry a testtube created baby. I have pretty much decided that this is not necessary... researching price, etc. I could never afford to do it anyway.
I just would like to know if anyone has had to make this decision, and if so, what process they took to decide. I would also like to know if anyone has regrets with either decision.
My intent is not to hurt anyone, I would just like to consider all possibilites and possible emotional and physical consequences related to all aspects of the procedure(s) I am facing.
Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

I had asked my Dr. if that was a option for myself. My surgery date still has not been set. What my Dr. told me is if he leaves it, then there is still a chance for cancer in the future. Me personally have opt to have it removed, I do not want the chance to have to go through this again in the future.

Yes, I had the choice of keeping my uterus and other ovary if healthy. It turned out my other ovary was healthy, but my dr. had to remove both fallopian tubes. I had a very large cyst on one of my ovaries. I decided to keep as much as possible. It was a hard decision but I am happy with it. The first two days after surgery my ovary was not functioning I was getting hot flashes.
After the first two days I was back to normal. I finally made my decision on keeping whatever is healthy because of lessening my chances of complications. My husbands cousin is a doctor and he told me he couldn't consul me on this decision, but if it was his wife. He would tell her to keep as much as possible (if healthy). Even with the cancer concerns. I had heard you can still get cancer without any ovaries. I feel I made the right decision.
Good Luck To You!!

Ask your doctor to make that judgement call for you on the day of surgery...... If they are going to be able to save ovaries - and there isn;t anything wrong with the uterus- THEN keep it.... but if they have to remove the ovaries- my suggestion would be to let them also remove the uterus (so you dont run the risk of cancer and have to go through surgery all over again)....... Like I said, ask the doctor to make the call--- letting him/her know that it depends on the condition of your ovaries.
This is only a suggestion. I am not a medical professional. I can only speak from my own exp.
I hope all goes well for you and that you are doing better soon.
God Bless,
Sherry

Honestly, that is my issue. Even if there is absolutely no purpose to having it, it still seems as though I should. My concern is that it may be a bother later because it is still there? I really still haven't decided, but find myself wondering both sides of the coin. I literally stand on the fence on this issue. That is why I am curious how others in my situation dealt with the issue.
Thanks for the question!

I think I must be of the least popular decision...If you are at peace without carrying a child, then why keep it....I'm 99% of the others here would disagree with me on that, but that is the way I feel. I don't come from a long line of female porblems. After I had my kids, my periods became abnormal...3 days on, 4 days off, 5 more days on, then it would start again on the 28th day. I could have went on the pill, but I didn't want to do that again. I could have tried ablation, but there was no guarantee. I talked to my dh and my dr at the same time and I made the my decsion for the TAH and they both agreed with me. I asked my dr why more women don't choose this option and told me that it was because they don't have the 6 weeks to take off work. I work in the schools, so I have the time. I know my decesion may not be popular, but I beleive that it was the right on for me.
p.s. Our twins were invitro babies and there would have no way for us to afford to have more. It is increditably expensive.
Hope this helps..it's just my opinion
