3 Days Post Hysterectomy - Pain and very little support from doctor's office
Hello. I had my surgery on Monday. I was expecting it to not be easy but it was even harder than I thought. I remember waking up in such pain and must have thrashed around a bit because I was quickly out again and had bruising/dried blood on my cheekbone as well as a some scraping on my arm.
That evening, the nurse on duty called the doctor and got permission to give me two percocet while I was still waiting to urinate. I was having a tough time walking because of the pain and the nurses were surprised that there was nothing ordered for me. A bit after the percocet, I was finally able to use the bathroom and was given the all clear to go home. It really helped with the pain too. They seemed really surprised that the doctor's office had given me nothing stronger than Ketorlac for pain and the Ketorlac is doing nothing to help the pain (at least as far as I can tell).
I originally had been given a written prescription for percocet but when my surgery was canceled back in October (by insurance) I threw away all the hospital paperwork including that prescription.
so last week I called and let the doctor's office know that I no longer had that prescription, could I get another. The nurse asked if I thought I'd really need it and, if I had pain, just tell the nurses in the hospital. So, that's what I did. They told me the doctor is the one to write the prescription and they were surprised she did not.
And, yes, there is pain. I'm on day three. One nurse called in a prescription for Tylenol #3 which did nothing. I started taking two at a time and that takes the edge off but I'm just wondering why I have to muscle through the pain when other women here are able to get painkillers that they need. I called again yesterday when the pain was bad, left a message and no response.
I am so thankful for this forum because I was feeling like I was abnormal for having pain from this surgery (not rational I know but I just had surgery and am not feeling very rational at this point).
I've had two c-sections and both times, I skipped the pain meds because I wanted to be coherent for my babies. Now, when babies are not an issue, it seems crazy to me that I can't get help for it.
I was going through my medicine cabinet and found some hydrocodone that I was given last year for a kidney infection. I never used it. Does anybody know if that is stronger than Tylenol 3 and would it help? I've even had a friend who just had a hysterectomy herself who has leftover percocet offer it to me. She says she has a high pain threshhold but even she used a few of the pills. Not sure if I should take her up on her offer. I would never take anybody else's medicine but I really would like to not go through this.
Thanks so much.

Hydrocodone is what I was given after my hysterectomy. I was prescribed 1 every 6 hours and I took them religiously but they only seemed to work for about 4 hours then I suffered for 2 hours until I could take my next dose. I hope you can get the pain relief you need, there's no reason for you to suffer.

So sorry you are going through this. I had my surgery Monday too and from the moment I woke up in recovery I was in so much pain I could barely function. I also generally avoid painkillers and have a high pain tolerance but could barely walk, couldn't eat for two days and have been miserable unless I take both the percocet and Advil they prescribed. I can't believe they aren't helping you more, it's absolutely ridiculous. This is serious pain, I've had 3 children with espisiotomes and nothing like this pain. Keep calling your doctor's office, you shouldn't be powering through this! It's hard to heal when you are in so much pain.

Re: 3 Days Post Hysterectomy - Pain and very little support from doctor's office
Just wanted to update, I got my percocet and what a difference it makes! Everything was just so painful until I took it and, after taking it, I was able to get a good night's sleep and roll out of bed with very little discomfort. Even coughing hurts so much less. I've only had to take one pill so far and feel ten times better. I know that throughout the day the pain increases so I'll probably take another this afternoon or evening. Just feeling so relieved now

Stay on top of your dose, managing pain is easier than going from square one again! Drink lots of fluids, they can cause constipation which is not what you want right now. *hugs* so glad you finally got this under control!

Glad to hear you're doing better. Just a heads-up: Percocet is a mixture of oxycodone and acetaminophen. Tylenol is *also* acetaminophen. (T3s have codeine added.)
Do *not* mix Percocet and Tylenol. Acetaminophen can cause liver damage when overdosed, even to the point of being fatal.
Don't take any Tylenol while you're on the Percocet and you should be fine.

3 Days Post Hysterectomy - Pain and very little support from doctor's office
I am so sorry you went through that! My doc gave me rx's for Percocet and 800mg Ibuprofen before leaving the hospital with instructions to alternate them every 4 hours. It's safe to say I had minimal pain for the first few days doing that and then tapered off.
I honestly feel it helped me heal better because I wasn't tossing out energy hurting. Just had my last checkup at 7 weeks and doc says I look great and am free to do whatever (within reason....lol)
Glad you are feeling better and so happy it got straightened out!
