Numbness and Some Nerve Compromisation from TAP Block Post Hysterectomy

I had my surgery on 2/21/17, and now I'm dealing with postoperative pain; as well as nerve damage from the transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block that they gave me for pain post-op. Now I have to do physical therapy and they think that I will regain strength in my (r) leg in 6 weeks. I'm fighting to keep a positive outlook, but frustration and fear creeps in every now and then. Has anyone else experienced nerve damage from the TAP block?

Re: Numbness and Some Nerve Compromisation from TAP Block Post Hysterectomy

I'm sorry to read that you'll be dealing with physical therapy from the TAP block. Unfortunately, I'm not able to find many resources on nerve damage from the TAP except that it can happen when the needle is injected even 2-3mm too far and the block fluid ends up pooling around the femoral nerve. I've tried finding older threads here of Sisters who might have had complications, to no avail.

Non-femoral nerve damage from surgery happens often enough, and it can take several months to a year to repair itself, for a few it takes longer. Though I had nothing like you're experiencing - there was an area on my abdomen which was tender, painful and the skin was numb. After 4 months I started noticing some improvement and it's gradually gotten better. Occasionally that spot will let me know it's still there (yesterday, in fact), though it doesn't interfere with any activities any more. Sharing that to give you some hope, but it's a big unknown from one case to the next.

I wish I had more insight for you.
