Postponement of hysterectomy & Esmya

I have the following issue: my op is due May 27th and I have requested to keep cervix and ovaries. I have been using Esmya for 3 months to try and shrink tumor. All was scheduled when my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and I am nursing him at home in his final weeks. It turns out they can not prescribe Esmya for longer than 3 months due to its new licence. It is likely I have to cancel my op as I am also abroad looking after my dad. Any suggestions as to what I should do regarding the continued growth once the estregen production starts up again?

Desperately seeking advice, Leslie

I do not know anything about that drug, but I am assuming it is very much like Lupron Depo11.25. That is also used in 3 month dosages. I know with lupron it can be extended. I had it for 9 months. Perhaps the laws are different abroad.

With Lupron, you can still have the surgery after treatment stops. Chances are your symptoms will return within a month or 2 after treatment stops. There have been reports, although in the minority, that it has improved the condition, delaying the surgery for a few months to several months. There is no way of knowing what catagory you fall into.

I would re-schedule the surgery as soon as possible after coming home provided your symptoms are manageable.

Re: Postponement of hysterectomy & Esmya

Double check with your Dr. about the rules. Fibristal is the canadian brand name for this drug. I believe it only arrived here mid to late 2013.

I am scheduled within my 3 month presription, however they were not certain I would be and my Dr.had said if that had been the case I would have had to go off it, have a bleed, and then I would be prescribed one more 3 month round, but they could not be back to back.

It is worth a double check where you are, I know there are various studies that show length of effectiveness in shrinking fibroids.

All the best to you during this difficult time,

xo
