No BM 5 days post hysterectomy
I am in day 5 post op robotic hysterectomy. I have not yet had a BM. I am taking miralax two times a day and stool softeners. I am in so much discomfort. How long can a person go without having a BM? Should I be doing something else?

Re: post op
Try prune juice and coffee. They do help. Also drink more water. Hope the going gets good soon!

I think I went 7. Ugh. My nurse told me to use a suppository, worked like a charm!

I went almost a week. Try milk of magnesia. That worked for me.

My doc was aggressive and had me take 4ml of milk of mag and 20mg biscoydol- I had lose stools the next day but honestly that was better cause it didn't hurt to pass them

Re: post op
I went 9 days.. I had to use an enema. I tried stool softeners, miralax, milk of mag and glycerine suppositories.. After that I was ok.. Also prop ur feet up on a step stool, milk crate, something, helps push it out with out straining.

Re: post op
I went five days. We had to call the doctor if I hadn't gone 3 days after being sent home. He suggested Milk of Magnesia at 4 hourly intervals. It only took two doses and worked like a charm.
Given that I have a LONG history of bad constipation issues and can ordinarily go a week between BMs, this was nothing short of a miracle. But then, my uterus and left ovary were fused to my colon so I'm pretty sure that all things bowel-related will be much easier now that little complication is removed.
In short, try the Milk of Magnesia. Miracle cure.

The mag citrate drink you drink before surgery works everytime. I never had a problem and stocked up on those. You can buy at walgreens. I love them

Re: No BM 5 days post hysterectomy
Unfortunately, that's about par for the course. :-( This is the worst part of the surgery, no contest. Keep taking Miralax and drinking lots of water, and keep in touch with your doctor. Hopes things start moving for you soon; keep us posted. *hug*
I love how we can basically ask one another, "Let us know when you poop," with a straight face on this board. Where else can you do that? :-)
BTW, if you are on any opiate pain medications like percocet, things will improve once you aren't taking them anymore. They slow things down.

Re: No BM 5 days post hysterectomy
Thanks for all of the support and advice! I am glad to know that this constipation is normal and not just a complication of mine! Started the prune juice and still nothing. I've been trying to go w/o the pain meds, but the pain and discomfort from the distended stomach makes that difficult. When I have not ate or drank anything my stomach feels ok, but as soon as I put any food or drink in, it feels like it is going to explode. I had wondered about trying the magnesium citrate again because it sure worked good before surgery! Should I ask the doc about taking that, or since it is over the counter just go ahead and take it? I was really hoping to be able to go to my granddaughter's Christmas concert at school tonight, but this swelly belly business is going to make that difficult!
