PCA pump

Hello Sister!
I had PCA pump (Patient Controlled Analgesia) for pain control. My experience with pump was all positive. When I woke up from general anaesthesia right after surgery I was in great pain. Morphine was administered, and when I woke up next time, the pain was gone. The pump then administered safe dosages of morphine and my pain level never went past three (that was during my first attempts to drag myself to bathroom). It was wonderful! I never felt 'high'or being drugged. I hardly used the button for more pain relief. Because of the steady pain control, I did not even feel my IV. I had an operation (0varian cyst removed)in -79, and having IV for nine days gave me great pains.
I was told that not having to deal with pains helps body recover faster. Makes sense. This method worked for me, because I could tolerate morphine. I also rereived information on the pump prior my operation. I concider myself very lucky, because I have not needed any painkillers after the pump was removed (third day post-op). I was also blessed with lots of support from my close friends - and my Hyster Sisters! Thank you for this incredible site!!! :-)
Final suggestions...Your positive attitude and determination to look after your healing are the most powerful helpers both pre-op and after. Thanks to the advice from my Hyster Sisters, I had prepared my 'recovery nest' in my bedroom in advance. I had also made chicken soup...yes,it heals...To boost my immmunity during recovery and to fight off infections, I took a multivitamin, Extra Vit.C and drank home made cranberry juice (it has less yeast-feeding sugar than store-bought ones). Of course prune juice was also on the menu..goes without saying. So far my recovery has been without any complications. I've had the 'usual'gas problems and swelly belly issues as expected. I am 48 years young and had my uterus/cervix removed but kept my ovaries. Recovery takes patience and REST. Count on your Hyster Sisters advice on that matter. All the best to you and an encouraging hug!
Meira.
