nervous new date
I would have postponed mine forever, but my DH wouldn't let me. I am two weeks post-op today, I thought it would be bad healing up around Christmas but now I realize it was the perfect time since the kids are out of school for the winter break and I don't have to worry about getting them up, fed and to school. I had mine done abdominal too, it was not nearly as bad as I had thought. I think the waiting was the hardest part, I was giong nuts up until my pre-op and a calm just came over me, and my heavy, aweful period had to give me heck one last time right before surgery and I was looking forward to that never happening to me ever again! I was worried that I wouldn't be able to let someone else do everything, but my DH sure has stepped up and amazed me, he can be quite domestic! Just let people help you, husband, family, friends, etc. I was able to get on my knees next to the tub and give my little one a bath last night, then I was able to bend over her bed to tuck her in and kiss her goodnight, she looked at me and said,"Be careful mommy, I thought you couldn't bend!" Don't Worry you will do just great!

Badgersbabe - I have been waiting and watching to see if you posted about whether you were going to have your surgery at Christmas or not. Seems like you got it all worked out for something that makes you and the family comfortable. I didn't have mine abdominally and just from what I had I would say start practicing patience now. Everybody is different and some people seem to be up and about faster but you want to watch overdoing it (and the simplest thing could be overdoing it). Research the site, check out the post op checkpoints. Either cook now and freeze food or have it lined up for people to bring food over. Start teaching the boys now how to do laundry and some housekeeping.
I'm glad to hear from you, hope you have a wonderful holiday and will continue to have you in my prayers.

Hi Badgersbabe
I had TAH in July - kept my ovaries - 5 months post op now and each day I get better but you must take it easy in the 6 months to a year after your surgery - my best advice....take all help anyone offers- food, helping with laundry , vaccuming- every little bit helps and if you have small childern let people help. People really do mean it when they offer...- make meals in advance and don't sweat the small stuff when the house is a mess- really take the time to be good to you in the post months after surgery it is so important .. good luck to you...the road will seem very long but you will have success and get thru it and know that there any "sisters" out here thinking and praying for you

I'm glad you were able to postpone the surgery until January when the holiday rush is over.
I had a 3-year-old ds when I had my hysterectomy. I wasn't incapacitated or bedridden by any means, but I really didn't do much beyond running the remote on the TV or getting my own water for six weeks! I just didn't feel well enough to be up and around much.
It was difficult for me to let things slide (and slide they did.... ) but a few reminders I got from other (((sisters))) really helped alot.
First, I remember this one when I was tempted to and do other household duties -- Someone here said, "The housework will wait patiently for you to get better. Become friends with the dust bunnies. Name them if you want to. It will be OK." And you know what? DH and DD did a pretty fair job of cleaning (OK, I have a cleaning person, too -- but she only comes once a week and oh, the messes that the family can create in just an hour!!!), cooking, and I learned that DH really CAN find things in the grocery store, too.
But then there was this one, for the times when you're feeling good but you're still under restrictions -- but you're tempted to overdo by lifting or just generally doing too much: Remember that your recovery is sort of like a freshly-poured cement pad. Within just a few hours, that cement "looks" dry. It's even dry to the touch. But if you try and walk on it, you'll end up in a big mess. And the mess can't just be "touched up", you have to wait for the cement to dry completely, then rip it all up and start all over again. This is not what you want for your recovery!
So as the other (((sisters))) said, take advantage of all offers for help, read the Checkpoints here, and remember you are a and should be treated accordingly! We're all here for you.

Great analogy. Who wants a messy sidewalk? I think that will keep me in line.
