Hysterectomy, LAVH scheduled on 9/25

Hello,

I am scheduled to have my LAVH on 9/25. Being on this forum and reading other sisters experiences have given me a lot of confidence. I am first on the list on the 25th. I do not have anyone to stay with with me in the hospital overnight after surgery. Do I need some one?
What do I need to pack in my bag before heading to the hospital. I am taking an uber to get to the hospital and will have a friend drive me back home after suregry.

Hi sornakka -

You may want someone in the hospital with you overnight, but it is not necessary. If you want an advocate for you after surgery, that may be helpful, however. At night, I sent DH home so he could get some sleep - he really could not do that in the hospital chair.

You will not need much at the hospital. I wore the same clothes to the hospital that I left in. You will also need a cell phone and charger. Here are some suggestions: What to Take to the Hospital for Hysterectomy

My brother stayed with me in the hospital until visiting hours were over, then he went home to take care of the "evening shift" for our elderly father and our 2 dogs; he returned early the next morning to take me home. As for what to pack, because you're staying overnight, I highly recommend an eye mask and earplugs for sleeping. I also packed several pieces of crystallized ginger, to handle the nausea from the anaesthesia; other sisters have also mentioned throat lozenges, to handle soreness from the breathing tube. Other useful items include a pen and notepad, for keeping track of your medications, and any other useful information. Also check our "hints from members" forum for more suggestions. Best wishes for a successful surgery and a smooth recovery!

I sent my husband home. The nurses take good care of you so I think you will be fine. Make sure you have very loose clothes to go home in. I wore big shorts and had to leave without zipping them up but my shirt covered it. But some extra big cotton granny panties as the mesh ones they give you suck and the pad doesn't stick to them. Ware flip flops as you Won't be able to tie your shoes. Bring a pillow of some sort for ride home to put on belly before seatbelt and if you have a choice its easier to step up in a vehicle then to crouch down. Best wishes.

Re: Hysterectomy, LAVH scheduled on 9/25

I was in the hospital for three nights and did fine on my own. Mostly I slept. The only time I had a problem was one night when my oxygen-measuring clip slipped off my finger, I couldn't find it again (sleepy, not wearing glasses, dark room) and the darn machine wouldn't stop beeping. I hit the call button and a nurse came and found the clip for me. :-)

My surgery city was a two-hour drive away from my home city. To get there, I walked two miles to the bus station, took a bus and then walked another mile from the destination bus station to the hospital. A friend who lives in my surgery city drove me home. I asked her to bring a small pillow to fit between my belly and the seatbelt, and the ride was quite comfortable.

The first day after my surgery, I was really loopy from the leftover anesthetics and narcotics. Get your nurses to *write down* your post-op instructions for you, don't try to remember everything they say.

We are here for you during your hospital stay! I recommend packing clothing which will be very comfy, sports bra if you have it, t shirt, pajama bottoms, deodorant, etc. Pack lightly. I wore a shirt with a maxi skirt and flip flops. I forgot my deodorant but didn't need it since the weather was mild. My procedure was yesterday morning. Knowing what I know now I would not have worried so much. Will you have someone to help you at home? You may not feel up to anything except rest. Drink lots of water and get your rest. Stay up on meals. I wish you well! I am here. My name is Tracey.
