Questions regarding post op bleeding (LAVH)... a tad long, sorry!
Hi all. Had my LAVH on 11/29. Went very well. Surgery itself was only about 40 minutes!
I ended up having to stay an extra day thanks to bleeding issues. Nurse called my doc in to check due to some big clots (orange size) being passed when I coughed a few times. I swear it felt like a baby had apeared in my pad! Sorry, TIM... it's the pain meds I swear!
Got the lovely vaginal packing done by my doc (by the way I SO wish this had been done under general... it was no picnic), removed next morning and I was watched carefully for further big bleeds. Doc was worried enough that she discountinued all water and food just in case she needed to go back in.
I kept passing clots but now down to quarter size or so... doc asked me to stay the night and they'd send me home.
This morning I passed some smaller clots and then one larger (not quite an orange but not small either) I was confused when the on call doc said that was fine. ??????
Chrage nurse wasn't pleased with my bleeding and checked with on call doc on last time (my doc was out of town for the day)... they agreed to send me home and take it easy. This doc's logic was that she didnt' want to do an examine and 'stir things up' if they had begun to heal. Ok, I can see that.
Very few clots now... but I continue to have a steady drip of red blood. Small... but there and steady. After I urinate there is just a slow steady drip, drip, drip of red blood.
What I had read( I THOUGHT) indicated most women have little to no bleeding post LAVH. So...
What the heck?!
I was told to call if any large clots pass, take it easy etc. I am to call MY doc at 9:00 a.m. and if I don't she'll be calling me to follow up.
I'm a tad confused. And looking for any input.
Thanks.
Tired, but not in much pain, and HOME!

Questions regarding post op bleeding (LAVH)... a tad long, sorry!
Hi Berta,
Welcome home! Wow, that must have been frightening to pass those huge clots. It sounds like you are being well taken care of though. I'm glad your dr is being so attentive.
I think your impression is correct that most don't have this type of bleeding. There are some, however who have bleeding for several weeks. Passing the huge clots isn't something that normally happens so I think it is safe to say you aren't off to a 'normal' start, whatever that is.
Our surgeries are all different because our bodies respond differently to all that was done. No two surgeries are exactly the same even if they are called the same thing either. There is good and bad in trying to compare.
As long as your dr is aware of your situation and keeping close watch on it I'm sure you will be fine. I'm sure you know, but you need to be very careful. Your body needs to heal and rest will be a big part of that. You are just so newly post op the bleeding will hopefully slow down soon. Keep a close watch on it so you can let your dr know exactly how many pads you are using and all that. It will help her to know if what is happening is ok for you or not.
Please take good care of yourself. I hope you have some help so can get lots of pampering. Let us know how you do and if we can help.
's, Rita

Questions regarding post op bleeding (LAVH)... a tad long, sorry!
I just wanted to pop in to tell you that I experienced what you are experiencing. Mine was from internal bleeding. I was not allowed to be up at all once the dr was informed and he came and checked me. But I had a large bulge on my right hip so it was obvious there was major internal bleeding. So please, stay down and call your dr in the morning. You may have a different situation than I but I would get in contact with your dr as you were released by an on call dr.
Best wishes to you! Keep us posted.

Questions regarding post op bleeding (LAVH)... a tad long, sorry!
I didn't have any bleeding other than a spot or two after surgery. By third day I only had a hint of pink and then nothing since. My roommate however was back in the hospital 5 days postop with heavy bleeding. They had her on a liquid diet and strict bed rest. She went home the same day as I did with just light bleeding. It was a good wake up call for me to be on good behavior when I went home so I wouldn't end up back at the hospital like she did. I would sure call your regular doctor once she/he is back in town. Take it easy - your body needs time to heal.

Thank you all so much for the responses, they made me feel much better!
I had instructions from the charge nurse to call my doc this morning, and if they didn't hear from me they were calling.
Absolutely no clots this morning, still steady drip... but little actual blood... so I feel better about it now.
I am trying SO very hard to take it easy... that is harder than I thought it would be!
Thanks again...
Oh, my doc's nurse is calling me back in a bit, but she sounded happy too. So, hooooray!!!!

So of course after talking to the nurse and posting here I had tow quarter sized clots. Blah... but I'm not soaking through the pads like in the hospital, so I feel like things are better.
I'm to call if it gets worse etc, and nurse will call me again on Monday.
Have to be different, don't I? ;D
Thanks gals...
Berta

Sounds like you're in good hands
I didn't have that happen to me, but I am glad to read how attentive and what you are doing about it. Just in case, will help me to gather info incase someone else, or I go through something similar.
I just wanted to reply to your post and mainly let you know I'm praying for you.

Glad things are better today! It isn't fun doing things the "odd" way after a hyst! Been there done that!
Be a good pampered princess and best wishes!
