Keep Cervix or Not to..
Hi all, I am 36 and scheduled for a LAVH in April. A little history, had a tubal, went off the pill, period started but never stopped. I had an ablation after that, to no avail. I spot everyday with 1 week of heavier bleeding this has been going on now for a year and a half. The dr's really don't say why, now say the only thing to stop it is to remove the uterus. But with having the LAVH I also lose my cervix. I had abnormal paps in my 20s a couple of cone biopsies but nothing big. He said it would just be best and when I asked HIM about sex without a cervix, he said it would be the same. I'm really worried it won't be. My husband and I are very sexual people and I like sex the way it is. Should I be worried? He did say he could leave it but he advised not to due to cervical cancer and routine paps. Please give me your story. Thanks!

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
I have cervical cancer which is the reason I will be having my hysterectomy so my cervix will be removed- no choice. My best friend had a hysterectomy several years ago and had her cervix removed. I talked to her about this exact thing and she said at first it is different because your body has changed but that she feels their sex life is actually better than before. I realize every woman is different though.

I'm keeping my cervix and my GYN strongly urged that I do so. If you've had normal pap smears and there's no cervical cancer in your immediate family, why get rid of it???

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
I am 34 and when I was 23 I had to have my cervix and uterus removed due to cervical cancer... and if u have had abnormal paps then I think it would be best to take the cervix to. I too had an abnormal pap and they did a biopcy on my cervix. Over the years i've had to have 2 more, to remove both ovaries, I found that my sex drive has increased, but thats the only good thing as I'm now in menopause and it sucks

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
I am 46 and I also had abnormal paps in my 20's, but nothing abnormal since. I had an MRI prior to my hysterectomy (I was hoping to find out my problems could be fixed with another procedure rather than a hysterectomy, but no luck). Anyway, they saw some abnormal spotting on my cervix with the MRI so my doctor did a biopsy about 2 weeks prior to my surgery. Everything came back normal, so I kept my cervix.
I know many women do not have a choice, but I felt fortunate to be able to keep mine. I understand that routine pap smears will be required, and I am fine with that.
After reading many posts here, it appears that many women are having great sex whether or not they have a cervix, so I think it's really a personal decision if given the choice.
By the way, is LAVH the only option your doctor gave you, or is that the only way they can perform the surgery based on your medical history? If it's very important to you to keep your cervix, you might want to check to see if any of the other types of hysterectomy surgeries are an option for you.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
One other thing to keep in mind; if they take your cervix, there's a higher chance of nipping your bladder during surgery. My Dr. also said if, for some reason, a woman wants her cervix out later, it's a 15 minute outpatient procedure. Very simple indeed. All the best to you and may God guide you in making the right decision.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
Another factor to consider -
Some doctors feel that leaving the cervix helps to prevent pelvic floor problems like vaginal prolapse and urinary incontinence later. Other doctors don't think it makes a difference. The evidence isn't clear.
Some doctors recommend continuing pap smears even if the cervix is removed. (They sample cells in the vagina rather than the cervix using the same techniques.)
I've never seen a study that looked at whether sex is affected by leaving or removing the cervix. I have seen studies that looked at how sex was affected by a hysterectomy. The best study concluded that for some women sex is unaffected, for some women sex is better, for some women sex isn't as good, and for some women it is different but as good. They concluded that in women sex is extremely complex.
Sorry. This probably isn't any help, but unfortunately the scientific evidence just isn't there.

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
All I can add is that as of now there is no consensus among the medical community on whether or not taking the entire uterus or cutting of the cervix and leaving it behind is best. I wasn't given a choice of whether or not to keep my cervix. Honestly, I cannot even tell it's not there. Sex is better than before, orgasms are more intense. That is not because the cervix is gone, but because I have no pain with intercourse anymore, and my sex drive has increased dramatically. The only downside to not having a cervix is some women enjoy the sensation of having the cervix bumped during sex. However, I'm finding that I'm having as much fun without it! Before I tolerated sex because of the pain, now I'm the one instigating it (often). Hope this helps a little!

Re: Keep Cervix or Not to..
BigNick I'm in the same boat, and I will probably have LAVH the same week as you. Glad you asked the questions because I've been very concerned about what sex will be like after too. My DH and i are so affectionate with each other, and it would wreck me to not be able to enjoy sex anymore.
PinkandBlue its so hard to imagine what it would be like without any contractions... so you're saying it's possible to still have an orgasm? So hard to imagine what that would feel like. You promise it's still enjoyable?
(HA! Only on this site would i ask such questions )
