Upcoming surgery 1/27: change of plan - vertical abdominal hysterectomy

Hello

Ladies

I was scheduled for a laparoscopic hysterectomy. Today I found out that I will be given a vertical abdominal hysterectomy instead. So Friday at 6 is my day. These posts really encourage me .Thanks

Re: change of plan

I had an abdominal hysterectomy with a vertical incision, 7" long. I had a pretty easy recovery, with no complications and minimal pain. Recovery wasn't fast, but it was easy.

Good luck on Friday!

Re: change of plan

Hi Felicia,

You're in the home stretch!

I had abdominal surgery too which was the best option to me. Your surgeon and medical team will do their best to keep you comfortable.

We have a great section called Hints that might help you prepare both mentally and physically for your upcoming surgery.

Hugs and best of luck! See you on the other side.

Re: change of plan

Hi,
I'm just curious why the plans changed plans from the laparscopic to abdominal before the surgery? I'm scheduled for a laparscopic hysterecomy at the beginning of March so curious what could prompt a change in plans.
Thanks and good luck with your surgery!

Re: change of plan

Hi zfwashington03 -

Recovery is different for everyone, no matter what the surgery. Some women recover faster than others. You just do not know until you are there.

I think I had a more typical recovery. I had a total abdominal hysterectomy with a 6-inch vertical incision. I also lost both ovaries and tubes. My recovery was not pain free, but the pain was manageable with narcotics and Motrin for the first several days, and then just Motrin for about two weeks after that. I did many brief walks, extending my distance as the days progressed. I rested when I needed to. I was VERY TIRED. I was not bedridden, and could do minor items around the house in batch mode. I was alone during the day, and had no problems taking care of myself. DH would come home at night and cook dinner, do dishes, and handle the necessities. I returned to a moderate stress desk job at about 3 weeks post-op, but could only do part-time work for another 4 weeks. And sometimes, it was tough to do those 4 hours. After that, I slowly returned to my life. I am a power walker, and it took about 6 months to return to my normal speed and distance.

Always remember recovery is not a contest, nor is it a race. You only get one chance to heal right. Follow all of your doctor's instructions to the letter and listen to your body carefully.
