HRT or BCP post op with ovaries

Another question I am unclear about. I'm currently on BCP as not reached menopause. If I were to have hysto but kept my ovaries would it be BCP or HRT post op? BCP doesn't seem appropriate but then neither does HRT if ovaries are still producing hormones. I am guessing I would need something as apposed to nothing to deal with other hormonal issues , hot flushes, anxiety, night sweats etc. Is there something in between the 2 types of hormones if you see what I mean?

Re: HRT or BCP post op with ovaries

It all depends on what your body needs, if anything. Testing would tell your DR what (if anything) you need.

I went on hormone replacement the summer before my hysterectomy. I was having a myriad of things happening from memory challenges to anxiety to water retention. I never dreamed that they were hormone related until a gal I work with shared she was having many of the same challenges and BHRT changed the way she was feeling. I found a BHRT specialist very close to my home that was in my insurance plan and after testing it was found that my ovaries had given up a bit before their time. We got the hormones under control and then my surgery set them back again. So the search for feeling my best continues...

If your DR is not well versed in hormones, you might want to ask around to see if you can find a recommended provider...just in case. Good luck to you!

If you do not have your ovaries removed and they continue to work, you should not need birth control pills or HRT, depending on why you use bcp now.

Before my hysterectomy, I used bcp for birth control and to control bleeding issues with my period. Once my uterus was removed, I stop using them. However, had I chosen I could have continued some type of bcp to manage PMS and the remaining endometriosis. But I decided to live with the symptoms, partially because my migraines were out of control and my neurologist felt any hormones would worsen them.

Talk to your doctor about your questions and concerns to determine what would be best for you.

Re: HRT or BCP post op with ovaries

Thank you both for your replies. I apologise for my ignorance but what is the "B" in BHRT?
I feel a lot better generally since being on BCP. Before taking them I was driving yself nuts as nearly every sentence seemed to contain the words "I can't remember" and then there was the constant anxiety of facial flushing and night time sweats-Oh Joy. I wouldn't want that lot back post hyster

The "B" is for "Bioidentical".
