5 weeks post hysterectomy and still having brown discharge and pain

Hi. I will be 5 weeks post op tomorrow. I had a TAH and BSO via davinci due to severe endometriosis. I have had continuous brown discharge since day one. If I do a lot in a day I will have more and sometimes pink tinged. The abdominal pain comes and goes and is usually worse almost severe when I have to have a bowel movement. I had the NP look at me last week as I was worried and she swabbed a lot out and said she felt I was doing too much and that the cuff was just not healed and seapage was coming out. She thought it was due to all the endometriosis that was inside and he had to cauterize. My doctor won't be back for a week.
Is this normal? I'm a nurse and my mind is thong ink about all the bad things that can happen post op. I haven't been lifting. Which is hard as I have two toddlers but I've been doing everything by the book. I'm just worried something is wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: 5 weeks post hysterectomy and still having brown discharge and pain

It can take weeks for the cuff to completely heal. Discharge that is brown tinged is normal (that's dried blood you are seeing) but constant discharge can be a sign you are overdoing it. You should have a 6 week follow up very soon and I would ask your doctor about this. At my 6 week, everything was healing nicely but not 100% there yet and I still had a few stitches that hadn't dissolved. The key is to rest. You have been through a major surgery! If you aren't experiencing any fever, aren't soaking through pads or have bright red blood, then I would say this is all normal healing. But please slow down and let your body concentrate on healing properly. Bring a list of questions to your doctors at your 6 week follow up so you don't forget anything. Good luck!
