Should cervix stay or go?

I'm going in for a vaginal Hysterectomy on May 21st (Thursday) and I assume he's taking out the cervix with the uterus. We only discussed leaving the ovaries and I've been reading that leaving the cervix is also an option but I can't find any data for or against. I've only got a couple of days to figure this out and don't want to miss the opportunity to keep my cervix if it's a good idea. Thoughts?

Re: Should cervix stay or go?

if your having a vaginal hysterectomy, your cervix has to be removed during the procedure. before my surgery, i googled cervix removal and other things like that and read as much as i could. i chose to keep all that was healthy and had the lsh..i kept my cervix and ovaries. its a personal decision and once you do some research, you'll feel comfortable with whatever choice you make.

I'm scheduled for a LSH but after reading & doing research i'm going to call my doctor about removing my cervix because i had 3 abnormal papsmears from my other gyno! also, i don't want to be the one with mini periods!

Re: Should cervix stay or go?

I had my cervix removed, it was my choice. I decided I NEVER wanted to bleed again...with a cervix, you still get a "mini period".
Do a search on here for it, many women seem to say it's not so mini.
I didn't care, I figured if I was going to have this surgery because of my horrible periods, I didn't want to ever, EVER bleed again. So bye bye cervix!
I am now three months out and not bleeding is fabulous. I had a rough recovery with complications, but I am fine now and so happy I did it!
Good luck!

Re: Should cervix stay or go?

Magellen ,

Like was mentioned above, with a vaginal hyster your cervix has to go. If you are thinking you want to keep it, you will need to have a minimally invasive procedure. A vaginal hyster removes your uterus through your vagina, your cervix connects to the top of your vagina and needs to come out during that procedure. You will then have the top of your vagina stitched closed forming a vaginal cuff. The LSH leaves the cervix in place so you don't need the cuff and stitches. Its the healing of the vaginal cuff that slows the recovery process and requires the 4 to 6 weeks of recovery vs the 2 to 3 weeks with the LSH. In other words if you want to keep your cervix you will need a minimally invasive hyster. Ask your doc about it.

The mini period is fairly rare, I had one. It was only slight spotting and never happened again. Typically your cervix is cauterized and the endometrium tissue is removed so the odds of any bleeding are small. I was on cyclic hrt at the time or I probably wouldn't have even had that one mini period. Usually only women with ovaries have the mini periods.

There is lots of info on the various hysters on this site--read, read, read. Good luck, hope this helps.
