SICK! Surgery may be cancelled. HELP

My surgery is scheduled for January 8th. I now have a cold (thanks DH) and IF I'm still sick on Wednesday 1/2, they will postpone the surgery. The cold is on the move to my bronchials where it will find a warm, comforting place to live for several weeks.

I know there's no magic cure, but I NEED one NOW. And I need it to work in 3 days so I can smile, not cough and be ready for surgery on 1/8. All suggestions are welcome. I will try ANYTHING to get better and have surgery.

Re: SICK! Surgery may be cancelled. HELP

The only thing I can suggest is to drink plenty of water. Also, it is good to drink a lot of water the day before you go to the hospital because it will make the IV insertion much easier. I was told that by the nurse at my pre-op visit.

I drink tea with honey when I have a cold or cough. It soothes the cough. I don't think there is anything that will cure your illness. Has your primary care doctor given you any instructions or an antibiotic? I recently had been coughing a lot and some mucus was yellow. My primary gave me the Z-pack antibiotic and it really helped. Right before my colonoscopy, I was almost sent home because the nurse said I had a fever. The doctor came out and listened to my lungs and said they were clear so he would do the colonoscopy. Have you called your primary to discuss this? It may be worth a try. Most doctors don't want you on any medications prior to surgery unless they prescribe them so check with your surgeon before taking anything. If your primary prescribes something, check with the surgeon also. Good luck. I know I was anxious to get my surgery over with also. My date was bumped by three days because the doctor had an emergency patient he needed to take care of that day. I didn't mind because then I was able to enjoy Memorial Day and the BBQ food. Mine was moved to Friday from Tuesday that week. All is well 12 years later.

Re: SICK! Surgery may be cancelled. HELP

Unfortunantely everything is closed until Wednesday for the holidays. I may consider a run to the walk-in tomorrow for this famed Z-Pak stuff. But, I also may just accept the fact that I am going to have to wait longer.

Re: SICK! Surgery may be cancelled. HELP

I'm going to an urgent care today too. I have had a cough rearing its ugly head for about 12 days now and it's definitely found a nice warm spot in my lungs, I don't think it's pneumonia, but upper respiratory for sure. I am scheduling my surgery this week, so lets hope by Weds I am better. Besides, all this coughing is making my pelvic pain worse!

Take tons of vitamin C. Add some zinc that is supposed to keep a cold from getting worse. Get a Neti pot. Use this 2x daily. My name is also Lisa, I'm scheduled for the 7th AND I'm also fighting a cold!! Let Me know if you don't know about Neti pots.

With your surgery scheduled so soon, do not self medicate without talking to your surgeon. Your surgery could be cancelled if you take vitamins and supplements as many can cause issues with surgery. I have specifically been taken off of Vitamin C prior to a surgery.

Using a nasal rinse can help with sinus issues, but if you have a sinus infection will need an antibiotic. My friends and family are not finding the Z-Pak's effective for a sinus infection and many of our doctors are not prescribing it for sinus infections but it can help with some illnesses.

I would suggest calling your surgeon as most have someone on call or an answering service. You want to know what your surgeon wants you to do so that you can feel better without having your surgery cancelled from taking the incorrect steps for your illness.

in there and I hope you feel better!

Re: SICK! Surgery may be cancelled. HELP

I know how frustrating it is. I developed a hemotolsis (sp?) due to severe anemia and had to have my first date for surgery postponed by almost a month. I was devestated. Second day came and went when they couldn't find a match for my blood. My husband burned through all of his vacation time at work due to those two delays and ended up taking unpaid time to stay home with me after. The only thing I can say though is that your Dr knows best and no matter how disappointed you may be if your surgery is delayed it is delayed for a reason. Hang in there. I am a firm believer that God has a plan for all of us.
