Re: Best Wishes to our November 30 Princesses

To all of our sisters having surgery this coming week- good luck!

I am nearly two weeks post-op and feel so much better than I thought I would at this point

I had a DvHS/BS and I can assure you that anything I have dealt with after the surgery has been less than the pain I had before. And even better? After surgery, things keep improving!

Prepare what you must to help you feel less worried while you are recovering, definitely get a recovery space ready for yourself, and if at all possible, have someone to help you for the first couple of days.

If you have to look after yourself, just thinking ahead (as we women are SO adept at!) to what you think you might want and need handy will help a lot.

Surgery is something that makes most of us anxious, and that's normal. I spent some time reading stories from women who had a similar procedure to mine, especially in the first couple of weeks of their recovery to see what to expect, and it helped a lot.

There are some really good tips here for what you might need if a hospital stay is part of your journey, and also what we have found to be helpful once at home.

I had one night in the hospital and did find that lip balm helped a lot, but I really didn't use anything else I brought. If they give you a spirometer, make sure to use it, it helps a LOT.

At home- the nurse at the hospital told me that for the first couple of days, sleeping sort of propped up made it easier to get in and out of bed, and it does. Definitely have lots of pillows- they are so useful for helping to arrange your resting position, supporting whatever you need. I have found a small soft pillow over my abdomen helps to keep me from bumping my incisions.

It will be okay- no- it will be better than okay! Once this surgery is done and you start your recovery, you will know that at the end of it, you will be healed and no longer dealing with your original issues. That's a great thing!

Breathe, trust, read here... we are all here to help you!

Re: Best Wishes to our November 30 Princesses

I am sending you and best wishes for an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery as you head off to the hospital.

I will be joining you in the Post-Op Forum in the weekly Recovery Progress Thread for members having surgery between Nov 30 – Dec 6. I will be there to offer support and encouragement on your recovery journey. Look for it at the top of the Post-Op Forum after your surgery.

A few things I found very useful for my initial recovery:
  • Stool softener
  • Gas X
  • Chewing gum (helps with gas)
  • Peppermint tea
  • Ginger Ale (flat)
  • Moist wipes rather than toilet tissue
  • Heating pad
  • Small pillow (to hold against tummy when coughing or sneezing, also protects against “pounces” from small animals!)
  • Body pillow (helps with side-sleeping)
  • Chapstick
  • Notepad and pen (for keeping track of medications)

Here are a couple of links you may find helpful:

What to Take to the Hospital

In order for us to provide you with best support, it is very helpful if you fill in your surgery date, type, and whether you are planning to remove your ovaries. Here is the link to your Member Survey.

Deep breaths, you can do this! The nerves can be really overwhelming. Try to keep busy, clean the house, cook and freeze meals, and get outside and enjoy your family. Take quiet time for yourself, enjoy a bath and stock up on movies and books for your recovery.

Remember rule #1 is to
"Pamper the Princess"!
