Home to early

Ok, so I had what was supposed to have been a lavh on the 12th of November, it ended up turning into a tah complete with ovaries. What should have been a simple hour to hour and a half surgery turned into five and a half hours. They did get the three laproscopic incisisions but when looking for the 5cm mass they had found, this one was a lot bigger. Turns out it is about the size of a grapefruit. Now less than 48 hours post op they sent me home. I am in horrible pain non stop. They took my pain pump away just 16 hours post op. Can anyone tell me if they have gone through this same thing? I am so ready to go to the emergency room for this incredible pain......but dont want to look stupid. Anything you can suggest for comfort?

Re: Home to early

Didn't they send you home with a prescription for pain pills? I was sent home with Percocet. Call the oncall doctor and have them call in a prescription for you ASAP.

Re: Home to early

Hi srose914!

I am sorry to hear that you are hurting. Like you, I had a TAH/BSO but I "knew going in" that it was the type of procedure I was going to have.

After three days in the hospital, I went home with prescribed narcotic pain meds but even though I took them on schedule there were still periods of quite extreme pain especially if I moved a muscle! I have formed the conclusion that with all major surgeries there are going to be some tough post-op moments but if you are like me things will improve daily.

Many s and Best Wishes,

Re: Home to early

You might be in more pain then the normal TAH due to how long your surgery went and it sounds like you have more cuts on your tummy then just the one big one. If you are hurting that much call the on call doctor or call the floor at the hospital that you were on and ask if a nurse will talk to you about if your pain is normal. I know when I came home it was very sore and painful. Relax. You are in the roughest part right now. It will get better. I promise. = )

Re: Home to early

I had a TAH and RSO and removal of adhesions from bladder and bowel, I knew this was what I was having, I have a vertical cut from belly button to way down into pubic area.

From what I have read around the site, I've been in more pain than many others but have had great dr helping me manage it. I'm in Australia so drug names will be different, but just for an idea for you, my iv pain medication was taken away 12hrs after surgery and I was put on oral narcotic, it is called endone. it does com in 5mg, but i needed 10mg and still do, I am a larger lady though...

I required the endone every 2 hrs and quite often was in quite a bit of pain for the half hour aiting for it to kick in, I was on 2nd hourly for 2 days then progressed to 3-4 hourly. I had the surgery monday afternoon and would have been ready to come home thursday morning but came home friday morning. I stayed on the 10mg endone every 4 hours until 10 days post surgery, It will be 2 weeks tomoorow since surgery and still need them 6th hourly or so. I was also prescribed a sleeping tablet at one week post surgery as had serious insomnia, its helping alot!

I still rest most of day..

hope that helps a little, when I was concerned about how much pain tablets/narcotics I still needed, my dr said to stop worrying, I had major surgery and it wouldn't last forever and that i shouldn't have to be in pain or get no sleep. He really put my mind at ease, and I am slowly getting there

Be sure to let us know how you go

xx

Re: Home to early

srose914,

It doesn't have to be this bad! Call whomever is on call for your doctor and tell them how bad it is. You either need better pain medications or you need to be reassessed to see it you have complications. Don't take no for answer.

Also, be sure to take your pain meds on schedule and don't let the pain get out of control once they have you on something that helps.

Good luck. Take control of this situation and call right now if you haven't already.

Re: Home to early

Yes they did, however, they do absolutely nothing to help the pain.

Re: Home to early

I am sorry you are in so much pain. The only thing that really worked for me was darvocet every four hours with motrin every six. You should check with your doc because I know some pain med contain tylenol & some contain Ibuprofen and you don't want to take too much of either of those. I would give the dr a call. As someone mentioned here this really is the hardest part but it will get better. Hoep you are feeling better soon!!

Re: Home to early

I would not worry about looking stupid going into the ER. You should not have to suffer in agony. I would definately go to the ER and then contact my doctor in the morning. Pain is no fun, and getting control of it helps speed up recovery.
