Many large fibroids and prolapse

Hello!
Has anyone with 6 or more large fibriods and a grade 3/4 prolapse had success with any alternative to hysterectomy? If so, what was done? How long ago? Thinking about trying to shrink my fibroids and repair the vaginal hernia. Thanks!

Re: Many large fibroids and prolapse

Although you will hear many stories about various supplements, etc. that will shrink fibroids, there's nothing that's been proven to do so. For every woman that has had success shrinking their fibroids through various means (supplements, diet, etc.) there are probably ten that tried the same methods and had no success at all. Which isn't to say they're not worth trying, but is just to say that success is not guaranteed, by any stretch of the imagination.

There are medications like lupron that can shrink fibroids temporarily by inducing menopause. But they only work while you're taking them (fibroids will grow back to the size they were when you stop), can only be taken for a very short while, and can have some very unpleasant side effects. So, do your research on these meds carefully if you want to try them.

Is there some reason you can't have a myomectomy and repair the hernia at the same time? You may have to consult a couple of surgeons and have them work together, but I have heard of women doing this. Even combining a myomectomy and a tummy tuck! If you're going to be opened up anyway, why not just fix all the problems at once?

Re: Many large fibroids and prolapse

Josie, thank you for the reply. I'm leaning toward a myomectomy and hernia repair. I have an appointment with my Dr. on Monday and plan to discuss this. She's been trying to get me to have a hysterectomy for about 4 years and it was her first suggestion when I prolapsed. My mother, her sister, my grandmother and a couple of cousins all had hysterectomies and they all have significant bone problems. Don't want to follow their path. I have spondylothesis between L5/S1 and want it to fuse naturally.

I would like to know the experiences of anyone who has tried these options. Did they work or end up in many more surgeries?
