Take with grain of salt?

Is my boss trying to be helpful? I don't feel helped.

I don't want to hear her input, on anything, because she and I aren't the same. Which might be unfair of me because I accept input from strangers regarding this before her.

But if she wouldn't sound so...so...haughty and knowitall about it I might be more receptive.

So when she overhears me tell my GYN nurse over the phone that the pain from recovery might not be as bad as the pain I'm currently having, (haha) she butts in and says, "Oh, you're so wrong."

And then when I tell her I'm only out 4 weeks, she responds, "I know you think you'll feel ok, but trust me, you won't."
(I'm not having a bladder sling, like you, so, yeah, I just might feel great! *bubble burster you.*

And when I'm at your desk filling out papers, and I grunt and grab my belly all of a suddden, don't look at me as if... just don't. Mkay? kthnxbai

Re: Take with grain of salt?

I can see why you don't feel helped and why the input from strangers (and they don't get stranger than me, lol) is more acceptable to you.

Everyone's experience is different and there is a good chance that hers wasn't one of the best for whatever reason. Maybe she's got a bit of "sour grapes" regarding the whole thing. You don't mention how long ago hers was, but with the improvements in procedures that minimize internal trauma, in addition to removing what is causing the pain, there is a good chance that you WILL feel better than you do now. So THERE! lol!

I've had less pain post-op than I expected and the pain is also 'different' as its more along the lines of a 'healing' type pain vs a 'growing/pushing' pain that I had pre-op. It also lets me know when I'm doing too much by making me sleep when i sit down to rest. Listen to your body and not your boss.

Re: Take with grain of salt?

HoneyWine Maker said it all-I also had a friend give me very negative feedback about recovery which took me for a loop for a day or so but I took it "with a grain of salt" because, even though we're friends, we have different approaches and feelings about the whole thing and recovery (much less different surgeries).
You'll do your own recovery (and I'll do mine) which I'm sure will go just fine!

Re: Take with grain of salt?

I was a little shocked at how cavalier some of my female co-workers were about my surgery. There were comments like, "Tell them to take out anything they can while they're in there," and "Just tell them to take it out vaginally; it's no big deal and you'll be back to work in a few days." The latter came from someone who, of course, has not had a hysterectomy herself and thought TVHs were an option for anyone who wanted one. Someone else thought it would be "just like your gallbladder surgery." (it wasn't) It was as though they were talking about getting a haircut or buying a new car, not an irreversable surgery involving risk, hormones and potentially life-changing results.

The details and the decisions are between you and your doctor, period. Your boss probably means well with her war stories, but doesn't need to know the intimate details of your procedure. Keep your positive attitude and amaze her with your great recovery.

Re: Take with grain of salt?

Everyone is different and everyone has an opinion. Your doctor will know what's best for you; however, I will tell you that depending on the type of hysterectomy you have and the type of job you have, you might want 6 weeks, especially if your boss is already giving you a hard time. I wish I would have taken 8 weeks, and I have a desk job. I also had a lot of surgery. I know myself, that it takes me longer to recuperate from surgery, and I'm certainly not trying to give you the negatives, but realistically it is true when they say it takes 6 months to a year to get back to "normal." I didn't believe it and so wish someone would have told me before surgery so I could have prepared better. The list of things not to do after surgery on here is wonderful. Only you can decide what is right for you. Good luck on your surgery.

Re: Take with grain of salt?

Thanks gals. It's disconcerting to have someone 'close' to me say that. I don't mind a dose of reality, but take it easy, ya know?

and yeah, I'm gonna shine no matter if I don't feel like, at least to her, because I'm spiteful like that. (Not really)

But I think mind over matter can go a ways.

Think happy thoughts. Think happy thoughts.

I hate that - I have had the same experience with my sister, who made a comment about how I shouldn't be worried or stressed because "all women have them eventually" That one really threw me, I had to sit down and talk with her, I couldn't believe she thought all women had them. It was as if she was confusing it with menopause or something...she seemed to think it was completely routine and something that eventually you just check yourself in for.

When I explained that wasn't the case, she said "well I'm definitely planning on having one, I can't wait to not have periods" All i could do was shake my head...do people actually think hysts are something to take so lightly?
