Completely Unprepared & Stressing
It's been a year since I last visited. I was previously scheduled for a TAH in June of 12. During Pre-OP, my hemoglobin came back at a 6, so surgery was cancelled. I did 3 months of Lupron Injections, which didn't stop anything and massive does of oral iron.
The doctor I was seeing at that time had a rather scattered office and I never could get on a surgery schedule when my iron was briefly up to 10.
Switched doctors last March, but was not thrilled. He wanted to do an open incision TAH- vertically and stated that he may have to go around my belly button (specifically said, 'it won't be pretty').
I had two iron infusions in May and found a new doctor last week. He put me on the surgical schedule immediately, not wanting me to have another period. Just before the infusions, my level went so low that I was in danger and it is just barely holding on now.
So...surgery was scheduled quickly and I am completely mentally and physically unprepared. Completely panic stricken over my first surgery, anesthesia, etc.
I'm not overly worried about pain - the fact that this will be ending the pain and discomfort that I have every day outweighs that! Of course, not coming out of anesthesia is my biggest fear. Having low iron for so long felt like it put so much stress on my heart. And I have mildly high BP.
This doctor is doing an SAH with a much more minimal incision. I have multiple, large fibroids (uterus measures about 22 weeks) that extend to the walls. A urologist will be inserting stints into my ureters to prevent damage. Is that common?
Ovaries are unknown at this time. They could not be visualized at the ultrasound a year ago. I am not particularly hopeful, as far as they go.
Uggh! I am going to throw up - I've been trying remain laid back about this, but I am stressing! I have 4 children 9-18 and they are not the most self-sufficient people. Not sure how this is all going to work out.

Re: Completely Unprepared & Stressing
Sorry you are having such a rough time with the iron and all...what a year you have had. You are not alone though...I was a mess when I found out I had to have mine and the week before surgery (between pre-op and surgery...OMG...), but I told my Dr and they helped me through it. Its a tough surgery to wrap your mind around. No doubt, it sounds like this will improve your life immensly, so keep your focus on that. It does help. When you get to the hospital, don't be afraid to speak up about your fears. They can give you stuff to relax you a little. I had a great surgical team. My physicians Asst. even came in and held my hand when they put me under as she knew that was my biggest fear. Such a little thing, but a huge gesture that instilled a bit of confidence in me. I wish you good luck on your surgery, you will get through this one day at a time. If you have any questions, what to vent, rant, cry...this board is the perfect place. Everyone here has gone through or is going through the same type things. And please know that feeling unprepared, nervous is oh so normal!

Hi XtinaS (back) to HysterSisters!
Your fears and emotions are normal. This is MAJOR SURGERY - of course you are stressed. Who wouldn't be?
It is scary being put under anesthesia. But know that the doctors and nurses will watch over you, they will take care of you, and they will see you through this. ((P83)) is right - if you tell them you are nervous, they will give you something to help you relax.
Is there anyone that can help with your kids? A neighbor, friend, family? Can your older ones help?
I know this is overwhelming experience. But we are here for you and will be by your side.
