Re: help with your experiences

I had my cervix removed and kept my ovaries, My sex drive has been HUGE since surgery. I waited over 10 weeks post op to have sex, and it was great, no different than before surgery. We went slow the first several times though because I was scared.I won't have a period again because my cervix was removed. If your thinking about keeping your cervix you'll need advice/experiences from other ladies that kept theirs! Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: help with your experiences

I had everything removed except my cervix, (you have to ask your dr. if you are a candidate to keep it or not and its up to you)...I decided to keep mine. My husband and I waited the amount of time and when I felt comfortable which was 8-10 weeks after surgery, and we went slow and carefully and it was fine, sex drive did diminish somewhat but I decided not to take any hormones. I dont have periods since all was removed.
good luck to you and God bless.

Re: help with your experiences

I had a open myomectomy in 2006 with 8 large fibroids removed. My uterus was 22-week sized at the time, and according to the surgeon, laproscopy was not an option. Recovery was tough, lots of internal scars to heal, and I did PT for pelvic floor issues. By 2008, I had large fibroids again... not sure if they were new ones, or if other small ones not removed grew large. I was 39 then, and I was not going through another myomectomy again, ever. Had TAH in August 2008, and compared to the myomectomy, recovery was a piece of cake. If I had to do it over, I would have just done TAH, one surgery with easier recovery. The TAH gave me my life back.

But you asked about sex drive, recovery time, if you have a period, etc... I wanted to tell you my history so you could relate to my answer. After the myomectomy, sex was painful for a long time. That's only my personal experience, but I think there was a lot that needed to heal, and it took awhile. In the meantime, pain killed any desire I had.

After the hysterectomy, sex was better than ever. I can't tell any difference in my sexual response (ok, I'll just say it, orgasms) now compared to when I was in my twenties, before the fibroids and the pain. I don't have my cervix, but I do have my ovaries. As far as whether or not my guy can feel anything...there's no difference.

You may need to make another post asking for comparisons, "with or without cervix" to get some more specific responses. I don't have any sort of period because I don't have any uterine tissue, including my cervix, left. I DO have my ovaries, and it's weird...but I can still tell when I do have my "period." I get the PMS, a little bloating, a little hormonal, and then in a few days I have to go to the bathroom more often, voiding the extra water, etc, and then it's over. So I know my ovaries are still doing their thing. I've heard that ovaries may stop functioning earlier in life if you have a hysterectomy, but I'm four years out, and I haven't experienced that yet. My mom was 48 when she started menopause, and my dad's mom was in her late 50's. I'm 43, and I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

The bottom line for me: when I had my TAH, I got my life back. And it's better than ever. In hindsight, I would do it all over again, but I would skip the myomectomy and just do the TAH.
