Re: I am having massive panic attack
Amber, good luck on the 20th. You,ll do fine. I have anxiety bad as well. And thats probably more of the problem then the surgery was. Im great at thinking the worse case. But honestly as i think back on my journey it wasnt that bad. I was up and around right away and walked aound the nurses station by the next morning. Yes i was sore, yes it took some time to feel more normal, but not long. By the endof week onr i felt pretty good. im now 2 1/2 months post op and it seems so long ago, and ive almost forgotten i had it done. All is good

Re: I am having massive panic attack
I certain agree with being honest, but there is a time and a place for doing so - hopefully we can be honest but exercise good judgment and kindness...scaring someone to the point of a panic attack was certainly not necessary. I too suffer from anxiety disorders and so I am sensitive to the pain and feelings of others - I know the feeling only too well of feeling panic set In.
In my humble opinion, this situation reminds me of people who feel
It necessary to discuss airline mishaps the night before you will be traveling by plane!
What has worked for me is to reflect quietly and give yoursel time to calm down - perhaps listen to music, watch a favorite movie...whatever calms your soul.
You need to have confidence in yourself and your decision. Perhaps your friends sharing horror stories thought that was productive, but I think from this point on you need positive support, from
People who support you unconditionally.
Just make the best decision for you! It is your life, your health and your peace of mind.
We are here to support you so hang in there.
By the way, my doctor allowed me to take anxiety meds the morning of my surgery. Discuss all your fears and options with your doctor if that will help you with your decision.
Sending virtual Hugs and strength to you!

Upcoming hysterectomy 1/20: I am having massive panic attack
There is nothing worse than being told horror stories before a major operation. Don't forget that some women get on a roll when telling others about their surgeries and exaggerate like anything. It is almost like there is a competition to see who had the worst experience! Your experience will be unique. I was in a big panic pre op and I ended up with an uneventful surgery and a very standard recovery - and I have a rather painful autoimmune disease, take heavy duty immune suppressing drugs and was probably a candidate for a much tougher time (infections, slow healing and so on). It seems to me that most women feel fairly sore for the first few days post surgery and then start to feel much better as each week passes.

Upcoming hysterectomy 1/20: I am having massive panic attack
Thank you all, you cannot even know how much this has helped. I feel like I have had a positive attitude until listening to hours of horror.
I did literally lose it! Throwing up physical and mental anguish. And I have been pretty relaxed until now. I did pack up my stuff and I left the retreat. I just could not listen to anymore. It was not beneficial to me. I came home and just relaxed and I feel much better.
I am sure they were trying to help me by giving me a clear picture of what to expect. But I think it's better to just get through it and figure it out myself. I am better. Still anxious but the sheer panic attack seems to be under control. Thank you all. Blessing!

Re: I am having massive panic attack
good luck on your surgery! I had my TAH with horizontal incision on the 14th. I have mental health issues including anxiety disorder but stay cool and keep in mind that after healing you'll be much better off. I've always bled for weeks on end with cramps so painful i'd pass out and have tried everything to control it, even when i didn't bleed on cycle i'd still cramp and be pretty much disabled by my uterus and i decided that hysterectomy was my best option. even now 3 days after surgery i feel better than i ever did during my cycle. be optimistic and positive!!! this surgery will give you a new lease on life. just take it easy after and make sure they leave your iv in until your just bout to leave so you can be medicated b4 you leave. I hada panic attack before i left b/c my nurse took my iv too soon and didn't tell me they couldn't give me my pain pills on leaving but could have given me morphine if i still had my IV. they ended up giving my a big dose of xanax adn i made it home okay but it could have been avoided. also if you can get up (nurse will help you up) adn pee adn not have the catheter in it will ease pain (or it did for me). you don't gotta be super woman, let them take care of you, but treat yourself nice and relax. it's honestly not that bad (not even close to my fears) also belly binder is like a big comfy hug adn super supportive. and anti nausea meds, gas-x & stool softeners are a blessing. i also made sure my own bowels were clear of gas adn stool before surgery adn i think that helped a lot. every person is different, i kept my right ovary adn cervix, i feel good adn can get around okay, but for you, you might not have such a high tolerance for pain so make sure you have support at home and don't be afraid to ask for anything. this is about you! i was just sharing to comfort, and i hope i did. you're stronger than you think. YOU GOT THIS NO NEED FOR FEAR!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/20: I am having massive panic attack
My surgery was for cancer, so the surgeon was going to be removing some lymph nodes to check for signs that the cancer has spread. This had (and has) the potential to increase my risks for lymphedema in my legs. I don't drive and get around almost entirely on foot, so lymphedema was one of my major concerns.
I was discussing this with some other women at work one day and one of them piped up, "Oh, lymphedema! A friend of mine got that in her arm after surgery for breast cancer! She can't use her arm at all anymore!"
I took a deep breath, counted backwards from ten in Russian and walked away. I had nothing constructive to say to that woman, and if I'd remained there, I would have said a lot that was *de*structive.
Do you know the song "The Gambler"? "Know when to walk away, know when to run"? Sometimes taking care of yourself means knowing when to walk away - and knowing when to run!
