Thought that I had a fistula...ended up being a suture

I started leaking urine at 3 weeks post op. My doctor did several tests and finally agreed that I had a fistula. She put in a catheter on Wednesday for me to wear until March 16. I was in so much pain this morning that I went back to see her, she called the Uro Gyn and had him work me in today. He did a cystoscope and found out that my fistula was actually where my surgeon had accidently put a suture through my bladder causing all of my problems. I am having surgery on Monday to have the suture removed. The UroGyn said that I have about a 50/50 chance that it will heal with me wearing a catheter for another 2 weeks. If it doesn't heal then I will have to have another surgery through my original incision. I am so frustrated, I kind of wish that he would just go ahead and do the surgery to make the repair for good. I do not want to wear the catheter any more. Have any of you heard or had this happen to you? I would like to hear from you if you have had or know of someone who has had something like this happen to them. Thanks for listening!

It hurts me just to read this! Unfortunately, I can't help you. I just wanted to extend some sympathy. I'm sorry you have to have more surgery and that awful cath!

I hope everything gets better as soon as can be.

Hi Delinda,

I'm so glad they finally know what's wrong and how to fix it, but very sorry it means another surgery for you. I haven't had this happen, but wanted to let you know we're here for you when you need us. Will you please keep in touch and let us know how things are going?

Thanks Nikki_N and Movingforward! I will keep you updated on how things go. I just wish that I knew someone else that had been through the same thing so that I could see how things turned out for them. I guess it is not very common to suture up your bladder during a TAH. Thanks again for caring!

Re: Bladder fistula

Tx,
I had surgery on 2/12/07 and am having the same problem you are. I have had several tests and am going for a cystogram and ivp on Wednesday. I have also heard horror stories about this. So it is very scary. Though I can't tell you what the outcome is yet. You are not alone in what you are going through. We are going to get through this hurdle too. Cindy
