Surgical Menopause....what's the deal?

Can someone please tell me what you have learned about surgical menopause and how common this is? Anyone out there experienced this or NOT that's even better.

Thanks!

Surgical Menopause....what's the deal?

hi. i'm not sure what info you're looking for. i entered surgical menopause in the hospital after my surgery. i really didn't even think about it until i had soaked through 4 blankets from night sweats and hot flashes! eeeeeek! i had surgery friday morning and wasn't given any hormones until sunday. it's safe to say that all day saturday i wanted to throttle someone...i'm sure it didn't help that they took me off the drip that day!

now i'm taking a tiny bit of estrogen every day...i can't take much cause i have endo. i go for my 2 week appt this week where we'll discuss menopause and drugs for it. other than that i'm afraid i don't know much about it.

Surgical menopause

I was curious too, and I found this great site that had a ton of information. When I asked my gyn/onc about whether I'd go thru it, his reply was "well, the half life of estrogen is about 12 hours, so yes, you certainly will". It wasn't what I wanted to hear , but I appreciate his honesty.

Surgical Menopause....what's the deal?

Hi Donna!

Your profile indicates you kept your ovaries. If that's the case, you shouldn't have to worry about surgical menopause. Your ovaries should continue to function and provide you the hormones you need. Sometimes, ovaries seem to "go to sleep" for a while due to the trauma of having the nearby uterus removed, but in most cases they "wake up" again.

I hope you have a continued good recovery!

Many s and Best Wishes,

Surgical Menopause....what's the deal?

((Bizet Woman)) thank you for clarifying ... I think there was some confusion on a previous/similar thread as to exactly what Surgical Menopause is.
