Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
I saw my gyno today and for the 4th year in a row, he insists that I need a hystorectomy! I'm not completely opposed to the idea IF I really NEED it but I'm not convinced that I do and that's what I would like your help with... Okay, here's the story.. No Endometriosis.. Doc says that my uterus is prolapsing (falling) but he mostly recommends it b/c of the fact that my uterus is very tender and sometimes painful... I do have lower back issues and pelvic pressure ALOT. Just before my period, you can actually fell the neck of the cervix just beyond the vaginal opening. I also have interstitial cystitis so much of my pelvic pain (which is pretty much constant) could be originating from that and it is pretty hard for me or the doc to tell the difference by the way that the pain feels.... Okay, I guess my question is this: should I have an abdominal hysterectomy just because my uterus is "tender" and sometimes painful or should I just "suck it up" and learn to live with it??? Is that a big enough reason to have MAJOR surgery or is my doc just "knife happy"????? Please help!!!!!!!!

Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
Do you ant that pain forever? well if not, get the darn thing taken out. do they have to take it abdominally or can they do a vaginal hyst? i was having bleeding issues, not much pain but refused to wear mini pads everyday just waiting for more of the same. my recovery at 2weeks is not so bad with the TVH. do what you feel comfortable with.

Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
Hi Donnadb,
I too have a prolaspe and much of the same symptoms (except for the cystitis).
I guess I have questions for you...Why abdominal hyster? There are so many other options, some less invasive and just as effective. You should really research this!!
Are other repairs needed? (i.e. A&P repairs)
Yes, it's major surgery, but you need to ask yourself if you want to continue to endure the pain and discomfort you are currently feeling...it becomes a question of quality of life. Is your current condition preventing you from doing and enjoying life?
Also, depending on your age...the longer you wait, the older you get and the harder it becomes to heal quickly and bounce back. Not this is not always the case for everyone and certain situations cannot be helped, but something to consider.
I've personally decided to go for it now. The surgeries are inevitable and I would rather do it now and get back on my feet than to wait and possibly be in worse health.
Good luck!!!

hsyto or no?
hello everyone and thanks for your replies! to answer a few of your questions: i am 42. my doc doesn't do vaginal hystos (says that they are more dfficult to perform safely and that it still takes 6-8 weeks to heal inside - not too sure a/b this one!). anyone know anything about the safety issues of vag hysto vs abdominal??

Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
OMG!! Yes!! There are huge differences btwn TAH (abdominal) and TVH (vaginal). I personally believe that TAH are more invasive than TVH; for one, there is a huge 4-6" incision on your belly, no external incision with TVH...it's all internal. There is tons of info on this site as to the differences btwn all the different types of hysters and their recovery times. There is also the same info in the booklet from HysterSisters, "What 100,000 Women Know About Hysterectomy". I recommend ordering it and ordering one for your doc, it's free. Shows that you are not a mindless sheep and you want to have a say in your healthcare. If your doc only performs TAH, I would find another doc who would give you more options. Remember this is your body and you need to do what is right for you.
I understand where you are at...I researched my problem and found that I wanted a LSH (laproscopic supracervical hyster--4-6 small 1/2 inch incisions on my belly, uterus removed though these incisions, keep my cervix), but my doc didn't perform this surgery. As it happened open enrollment at my work is going on and I researched the other docs on the other insurance plan...found at least 3 docs who do the surgery I want. One of them trained my current surgeon. Needless to say, I've moving insurance co!
Honey...bottom line, this is your body. You have a say in what kind of care you want. As long as it is medically feasible, you should find a way to get what you want. This may mean more work for you and a longer wait, but the end result would be well worth it. I've been working on this for almost a year and it's still not over.
Let me know if I can help more!!

Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
Hi Donnadb,
I agree with the other ladies. Get a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion, if you can. You might be a good candidate for a less invasive hyst such as a TVH, a LAVH or the DaVinci Robotic.
Yes...a less invasive hyst, depending on the type, can sometimes be more difficult for a Dr to perform....since it takes extra training on the Dr's part. And...what that means is...the surgery is less invasive for the Hyster Sister...and the recovery time in post-op is then generally shorter.
I got (2) opinions myself...and it is still one of the best things I ever did. My 1st Dr. wanted to do an abdominal hyst and she said I was *not* a good candidate for a less invasive hyst. My 2nd Dr. recommended a laparoscopoic hyst, a less invasive surgery...imagine that. I found out later my 1st Dr. could not do laparoscopic hysts.
Drs give us options...and we make the final decision when it comes to our bodies. A 2nd opinion might agree with your 1st opinion...and that could give you more certainty about a decision to have an abdominal hyst. However...a 2nd opinion might not agree...and you then have another opinion to consider and think about. Researching and seeking out all alternatives in pre-op is a good idea since a hyst is *major* surgery.
In the end...just do what is *best* for you. That is what is most important.
Sending best wshes~
Mary

Doc says hysto... SO SCARED W/ Questions!
sister
You are not alone, i want to share with you how i found relief and have actually had an ultra sound last week to prove my fibroids are shrinking, ovaian cysts are gone, my endo and lupus symptoms have improved and i have more energy than i remember having in years. I cancelled my hyster scheduled for april 10 that for years i've been against having but after fibroids made me bleed 3 months straight was considering anything to feel better. We need our ovaries for hormones neccessary for well being throughout our lives. I have found all these health issues are symptoms of a bigger hormonal problem. So i changed my diet and actually feel so much better. some say avoid meat and dairy i do a little organic meat and dairy that does't have the known growth hormones and antibiotics given to cows. Avoid sugars, packaged and processed foods but eat fresh whole foods instead. Omega 3 and flax seed are proven to aid in gyn health so try to eat fish but not shell fish, omega 3 eggs are excellent for you. Our foods lack vit and minerals we need so i take a organic multi vit and1-3TBS of organic flax oil every day. I wouldn't have believed it but thought a diet change can't hurt may help and it truly has. Hyster is not your only option do research read and follow your heart for what is best for you i will keep you in my thoughts and prayers I hope you give nutrition a try and feel better as i have my sister
