Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I had my BSO/Hysterectomy on December 27, 2012. Since the surgery I have experienced a lot of Insomnia. There are days I only get 2-3 hours of sleep! This is driving me crazy! I do have sleeping pills, but I don't want to become dependent on them for sleep. Has anyone experienced this? If so, what did you do to help sleeping?

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I have experienced it since my surgery. I thought maybe it was because I was resting or napping during the day but I've been back at work for two weeks and not napping and still having problems sleeping.
I go back Tuesday for my 6 week post op and I'm going to ask but like you I don't really want to get on sleeping pills.

Right there with you
.. no daytime naps and wide awake at 3:30am.
Would love to hear other ladies experience battling this.

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I also had surgery on the 27 of December 2012. I also have insomnia. I get about 4 hours of sleep and can't sleep at all after that. I just thought it was me. I walk around like a zombie. I tried sleeping pill and still the same. Any suggestions?

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I was the same! Sleep an hour up 2-4 hours...sleep an hour or 2 then up all day. Would lay around but couldn't nap. It was like that for weeks. Sleeping pills did nothing for me.

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I'm the same way. No nap, but up all night. I've tried Melanonin, cutting tv off, drinking warm milk, etc and nothing is working. It's starting to become a real issue.

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

Same here and I'm 6 months post op. Cant seem to sleep through the night. Sometimes I have a cup of hot decaf tea and it helps me sleep.

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

I have had this problem for years due to the Fibromyalgia. Some things I have found that help either me or others I know.

Magnesium - I take 500mg before bed, and it knocks me out. A friend only takes half that, we both find liqui-gels work fastest. If you get the right type, it also helps keep your bowels moving, which at this point is a real added bonus!!

Melatoinin - again liquid or spray seem to work the best. 3-10 mg doses - start low and work up... Warning - this may give you a groggy feeling the next day if you take it too late!

My dr also has given me Trazadone, which is actually not a sleep pill, but a very mild anti-depressant. If your Dr wants to give you something, it may be worth bringing up.

Make sure you clear stuff with either your Dr or pharmacist, as even natural thing can have interactions with meds you may be on....

Re: Hysterectomy and Insomnia

Mine started right after surgery and so I thought it was due to being uncomfortable; I basically would prop myself up and not move during the night and also the pain. However I will be going on 5 weeks since surgery and it has not improved. Sometimes I think it is getting worse. Finished my first week back to work and thought as tired and exhausted as I was I should be able to sleep well. Wrong. However when my alarm goes off I could then fall asleep. Hopefully this is something that will improve. I have my 6 week checkup the first week in February and will certainly be talking to my doctor about it. Hopefully the dark circles won't get darker by then!
