New here!! TAH Friday!

Hello all!! Finally I figured out how to use this!! My preop is in the morning, and my TAH is on Friday!!! I am getting nervous!!! I keep reading about other sisters having a epideral?? I thought they would just put me out??? Can anyone tell me how long they keep the catheter in and when I will be able to get out of bed???
I am 30 years old.....I feel I am really young for this surgery..and actually about 3 years ago I was told I needed it. I did a Uterine Ablation last year and it was a total flop! The bleeding never got any lighter...well for a few months, it was still heavy but then it became gushing periods with horrible pain. I am so lucky to have a boss(male) that was understanding and allowed me about 3 days off a month for it!!!AHHHH....
Hope to get more good info on this!! Does anyone know, If I have my surgery on Friday, when I will go home?

Re: New here!! TAH Friday!

My Mom had an epidural before surgery, was knocked out but still had the epidural after surgery to help with pain. My TAH is Nov 11 and I have not asked my Doc if he will do an epidural.

Re: New here!! TAH Friday!

Hi Chad,

I didn't have an epidural so I cannot relate to that. I did wake up in recovery with a catheter, but it was removed the next morning at 6:00 a.m. However, I did not have a TAH, I had a RAVH-BSO. I do wish you the best and hope that your recovery is smooth. I look forward to reading your post and will see you on the other side.

Re: New here!! TAH Friday!

I had an epidural but was also completely put under. The epidural was for the pain afterward. My surgery was on a Friday and they left it in until Monday. It helped so much as the pain was manageable. The doc ordered it beforehand but when I met with the anesthesiologist that morning I said, "So, you are giving me an epidural, right?" and he said, "Sure, if you want me to." So, they may not have done it if I hadn't reminded them. So glad I did!

Good luck. Oh, and I was in the hospital 5 days.

Best wishes. See you on the other side!

I had the same experience. I'm fairly certain that had I not mentioned it, I wouldn't have had the epidural. I too was also out with general anesthesia in addition to the epidural.

My surgery was Tuesday AM and I was released Thursday AM and quite ready to go home.

I hope your surgery and recovery goes as smoothly as mine did.

Re: New here!! TAH Friday!

Best wishes tomorrow with your surgery. I did not have an epidural either....was never offered or even mentioned to me. Sounds great, you might want to ask about it.

I had the morphine pump...and just felft soooo out of it and couldn't sleep. The catheder was taken out the next day, once they know you can get out of bed to go to the restroom on your own.

They will be trying to get you to walk as soon as possible.

Will be thinking about you tomorrow.
