Reflux after hysterectomy??

Hi I am 12 days post op..but been having off and on reflux pains etc.since surgery..I have a DX hiatal hernia and gerd..so wonder of the surgery has aggravated that.I still taking my reflux meds as normal..but just having more pains.and burning now then before..maybe it's the pain meds..or Advil.BC I have not been able to handle it before surgery due to my condition..just wondering if I was weird or this is common.

I have had numerous general anesthetics in the last 3yrs and after each one I got terrible reflux. It's not the hysterectomy, it's the anesthetic. I'd never had reflux before but I'd had gastritis twice. Your history of GERD would definitely make you more susceptible to being aggravated.

Two aspects of general anesthetic - the use of muscle relaxants and paralytics - can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to open up, making one very prone to reflux. It will rectify.

In my case my Dr put me on Zantac. I also took DGL (a natural supplement made from licorice root) and my reflux generally resolved over the course of ~3 weeks (until the next time).

Don't worry - this will get better. However, if your symptoms are really bad and not resolving, there are different classes of drugs to manage reflux and your Dr should be able to put you on something to relieve this.
