Did My Hysterectomy Solve My Back Pain?

Call me crazy, but I think the removal of my uterus and its giant fibroid has cured my back pain. Honestly, I thought I was 'just getting old' because I went from chiropractor to chiropractor, registered massage therapists, etc, and it would only relieve the pain for a day or two. My back pain has been bad for years, this past year getting so bad that it would radiate all the way down my right leg and make my foot tingle - after a 20 minute leisurely walk. I'd have to hold onto the car door to swing in, and get out. I swear, one of the things I was looking forward to with my surgery was being knocked out, because then I wouldn't feel my back pain (haven't had a good night's sleep in years, as it wakes me up and I have to re-adjust my position throughout the night.) Now, 2 weeks post-op, still ZERO back pain! Took a 45 minute walk this afternoon with the dogs - felt fine! Am I crazy to think the fibroid was causing it? My surgeon says it was huge, in her words, "basically a uterus on top of a uterus."

You are definitely not crazy!! I’ve had lower back pain for a couple of years - scans at the time showed a very swollen disc & I’ve been through the mill of physio’s, yoga, and exercise therapists trying to get relief. My back would flare up after long periods of being in an incline position for too long and in recent months was happening more frequently even though I was doing a lot of exercise with swimming, bike and stretching etc. A couple of months ago my personal trainer asked me if I had ever had any stomach surgery which might explain my back problems. No I said - not having any idea about the massive fibroid I had lurking inside me! Fast forward to 5 weeks ago when I had my hyst, and I was so concerned about my back going out again on top of everything else - and voila - from the day after surgery my back pain had completely disappeared and my spine feels looser than in many years. My back is still completely pain free - even though it’s now needing to compensate for my TAH recovery and my non-working for the time being core strength. How fantastic is that? Very glad there’s been an additional silver lining - and glad that you’re experiencing this as well! Long may it last!

Re: Did My Hysterectomy Solve My Back Pain?

An enlarged uterus, uterine fibroids can all contribute to back pains. I used to get a sudden pain in my back while walking & it would catch me off guard like someone suddenly stabbed me. I would get the pain run down my leg as well. It usually didnt last long. My uterus w fibroids suddenly enlarged a few months prior to my surgery, it was 1697 grams, it was putting pressure on my right kidney.

Gabrielle - YES! I was beating myself up for not working my core muscles more before the surgery, thinking that maybe my back hurt because I as out of shape, and that I was going to regret it, but between the back pain and the exhaustion from being B12 deficient (getting a B12 shot every 2 weeks, due to being anemic because of all the bleeding with the fibroid) I just couldn't summon the energy. (I started horseback riding a year ago, and I think that helped my core though). I was so worried that all the resting I'd have to do after would kill my back - but no pain! Also, not exhausted and missing my B12 shot (I'm a week overdue - I get it tomorrow).

LailaStar: Yes! Sometimes my pain was like that too, I'd be walking and then double over, felt like someone had stabbed a knife in my back. That's gone too! Who knew...I thought my problems were unrelated. So happy I've done this surgery

YachtyChick - Congrats! Glad to hear these success stories!

I had back pain also and put it down to arthritis. I had Full Abdominal Hysterectomy & Ooperectomy and removal of large cyst in May this year. For 7 weeks I had no back pain but since then I am crippled with right leg, groin and lower back pain. I have not had any follow up from the operation and no-one told me what to expect. My GP has written to the Consultant twice and we are still waiting for a reply. I am referred to Muscular skeleton team and taking pain killers. It's agony and has stopped me doing the things I enjoy like cycling and walking. Only just found this forum

Re: Did My Hysterectomy Solve My Back Pain?

My lower back pain is gone. My uterus was three times bigger than a normal one and it was filled with fibroids and had a 6 cm fibroid sitting on top of it. That was all pushing on my colon and bladder. I use to have lower back pain, bladder leakage, constipation and diaherra. Fibroids can cause all of that. Those symptoms can also cause your thyroid to go out of whack. That happen to me too. It’s amazing what your body starts going through when fibroids start growing and causing havoc. When I woke up from surgery all my pain was gone.

Did My Hysterectomy Solve My Back Pain?

I have been wondering if this would be the case. I have had lower back and hip pain for ages. In tracking my period, I noticed my Pai was worse the week before. My uterus was considered large and it was full of fibroids. It's only been a week, but my right hip hasn't been bothering me at all and it's usually the one that hurts the most. Fingers crossed.
