Hyperplasia

So, I have no idea if I am even in the right place here. I joined Hystersister yesterday at the recommendation of my doctor. I have simple hyperplasia without atypia, (totally benign). I tried taking progestrone but react badly to it. My only other option is a hysterectomy. I am trying to decide vaginal or abdominal; just uterus or ovaries too; and when to schedule. Like I said, I'm completely new here and any suggestion would be helpful. It took me a good half hour to even figure out how to post! Thanks.

Hello,

I had a balloon ablation in June 2003 which has failed. Had I to do it again, I would have skipped straight to the hysterectomy - that's just me personally :-) That said, it doesn't fail for everyone ... it just seems that my reproductive issues were particularly resistant to the ablation. It *is* a good solution for many. In my case, it was short-term solution that worked well while it worked.

Do look at the success rates for women 5-7 years down the road (or more) realistically as compared to the "immediate success" of have periods go away for just a year or two. And remember that having the ablation leaves you at greater risk for endometrial cancer. I heard that same thing and somewhat shrugged it off, and now four years later get to hope that the retest of my abnormal endometrial biopsy (and the tumors on my cervix) are not malignant.

There is a great forum for ablation ... I can't remember the name, but do a google search for "endometrial ablation forum" and it will come up. Loads of helpful information and support! GL!

One more thing. At the time I had the ablation, the dr's recommendation was a hysterectomy. But he said we would start with an ablation and take it from there.

Hyperplasia can come back, it did for me.

Hi Always Greatful, I'm new here too.

I was also just diagnosed with hyperplasia - actually "possible focal hyperplasia." I have had heavy periods for 2+ years, making me so anemic I was craving ice. (This is called pica.) Like BlueSkiesAZ, I had a failed balloon ablation, in Jan this year. (uterus too big) Afterwords, my D&C showed the possible hyperplasia. My docs recommend a hysterectomy. This is because an ablation would make my uterus impossible to biopsy, so it just needs to come out.

I'm also trying to decide which kind of hysterectomy to have. Also, tummy tuck or not? If not, I'll have a vaginal hyster, keeping my ovaries. (I had a pulmonary embolism in 2002 after a c-section, so I can't take HRT, and need those ovaries!)

I'm hoping to have my hysterectomy in Sept or Oct.

BlueSkiesAZ, are you scheduled for a hysterectomy?

Not scheduled yet, but is the most likely outcome in the very near future. I have a consultation this Friday a.m. with a doctor that works closely with the Gyn Onc that I want to see. If there is cancer to be found, I would like the ONC to find it ... but he is only taking patients with a definite cancer diagnosis. UGH! I hate the waiting! I feel kind of like "just take it out already"!
