Sleepless & bloated

Is it common to have insomnia after surgery? Also, I had laparoscopic hysterectomy (leaving my ovaries) but my stomach is still very bloated. How long does this usually take to go away?

Re: Sleepless & bloated

I didn't sleep well last night either. Even with pain meds. I had a hard time getting comfortable and the kitty kept wanting to sleep on my tummy.

Re: Sleepless & bloated

I am 7 weeks post op. full abdominal but kept my ovaries. I have not been able to get to sleep w/out Tylenol PM and even then it's well after midnight. I haven't had pain since week 1 so I really don't want the Tylenol but I do need the sleep.

Re: Sleepless & bloated

I'm midway though week 5 and coped with the insomnia that had no pattern to it for 4 weeks!! It finally happened that after 1hrs sleep I visited the Dr. She was really supportive as I'd tried herbal remedies, no caffiene, warm drink and even osteopathy. I was prescribed with a half dose of the sleeping tablet (Zopiclone) for 7 tablets, 4 to kick my body clock in and 3 for when I might need them again. They have help and if nothing else I feel a little more normal for having had sleep. It's definitely only mild as I've had no side effects at all other than a metal taste in my mouth, I'm certainly not groggy the following morning which I was dreading.

Now, the bloated thing we have NO control over, lol. On the days I've rested it can be bigger or vice versa. I found that walking brings it on more, but it goes away a little after I've rested over night, but that is only because I'm sleeping now - I'm the same weight I was when I went in for surgery, but I'm two sizes bigger on my waist - um!! The ice packs in the binder help loads.

Re: Sleepless & bloated

I have had terrible insomnia for the past few nights. My doc says this is very common after surgery due to the combined effects of hormonal fluctuations, residual anesthesia, and other medications.

She said that if it becomes a recurring thing that I should try not to take naps in the daytime, as much as sleep might benefit me because nighttime sleep is more important. She also said to be aware of what I'm consuming...stealthy culprits like late night chocolate or tea.
