When can I do stairs?

Wow, I hope I'm as healthy as the last poster!

My surgery is on Dec 2nd and I was wondering about the "Holiday" thing. My issue is how long will it be until I can climb a flight of stairs again? We will probably have lots of family here and I hope to be well enough to visit with them..

I live with my family and my living area is upstairs. Naturally I will be downstairs during my recovery, but how much time does anyone believe it will be until I can go back in my room again?

Re: When can I do stairs?

Hi Mediachic,

Welcome to Hystersisters. For the first couple of days I had someone walk behind me while going up the stairs, I had wobblely legs at first. After that, I ventured to the upstairs on my own at a slow pace.
Some other ladies here have gone up the stairs backwards, I think that there is less strain on the abdominal muscles that way. But, I have a balance problem , so I personally never tried it that way.
By Christmas time you'll be a little over three weeks out from surgery, you might still be taking things slowly. But listen to your body.
Best wishes and Hugs,
Carol

Re: When can I do stairs?

I have my TAH/Ovaries removed on 11/13/09. I came home from the hospital on 11/16/09. I walked up the flight of my stairs to my room that night and slept in my bed. I have been walking up stairs 1 -2 times/night since.

Walking I have been told is fine (including stairs) just don't overdo. If you are tired or in pain stop and rest.

Re: When can I do stairs?

Hi Mediachic!
My bedroom is downstairs and the 'family and kitchen areas' are upstairs...after my surgeries, I was able to go upstairs the next day and thereafter without pain. The most difficult part is getting up out of the bed! Typically I had to have a little assistance or work on finding a way to slowly work my way up out of the bed...

I wasn't bounding up the stairs, but taking my time to move to a different chair or the couch to lay and relax before going back to bed again. The doctor cleared me for all walking as I felt like it, so stairs were not an obstacle.

Just be ready to go at your own pace as you feel like it and absolutely don't push yourself and don't spend alot of time 'visiting' with family and friends! Unfortunately, that may wear you out in the early first couple of weeks and you will want to rested to be ready for the holidays!

Good luck!
