pain? pain meds?

I had my hysterectomy on Dec. 9th and was given a prescription for stool softeners, ibuprofen, and oxycodin (sp). I am down to 9 pain pills left and worried that if I need them over the weekend, I won't be able to get them. I have taken 2 today, and also the ibuprofen. Nights my husband has given me one every 4 hours, which I have needed. I may have enough but am not sure, and certainly don't want to run out if I'm still having pain! Any ideas, or what have others done for pain control?

Re: pain? pain meds?

Call your dr in the morning and ask for more! most drs will give you at least one refill without having to see you. I took pain meds for almost 3 weeks at least once a day! if the ibuprofion doesnt work you could try aleve...that worked better for me. The big thing about pain is not to let it get ahead of you...its harder to get good relief that way. It isnt being a "baby" to ask for more, you just had surgery! I wish you a fast recovery!

Re: pain? pain meds?

Thanks, Laurieb1
That first night in the hospital the nurse let the pain get away from me. It took the following day with clockwork pain meds to get me back on track. We've slowly weaned off of pain pills (from 3, down to 2, and then down to 1), I've also been better during the day with taking ibuprofen and tylenol, but I am scared to death of running out of the pain meds. They make me feel nauseated, but really help with the pain. I'll call tomorrow! Thank you for your advice!!

Re: pain? pain meds?

If they make you nauseaus ask for either some zofran or phenergan. Phenergan is very cheap, but can make you really sleepy...most of the time they give you 12.5mg and that makes you a little less sleepy. Zofran works better for some, doesnt make you as sleepy, BUT is pretty expensive! Just make sure if you are taking pain meds not to take a lot of tylenol with them, its really easy to take too much without realizing it if you are taking pain meds too. And if you eat a little snack about an hour before you take pain meds that can help too. remember that everyone is different with pain meds with what works and what doesnt, and just because someone you know took nothing but tylenol after surgery doesnt mean that you will too. Take what works for you! And keep in mind that the pain wont be there forever, and you will feel better!
