pain still significant- 1 week post op

I am one week post op and still having significant pain (a 7-8 on the hystersisters scale). I had a laproscopic hysterectomy, and they took everything, including ovaries out. I also had the Biolift I and II mesh lifts of my bladder.

My MDs (both gyn and urology) were gone over the holiday and weekend (of course, right?) so the MD on call harassed me about having taken 30 vicodins (prescribed 2 tablet every 4 hours as needed for pain). I was discharged Wed evening and needed a refill Sunday night.

Is this too many pain meds? I am not constipated but the pain upon BM is shooting and makes me want to cry and the pain just laying in bed is pretty bad. I have been up and walking, etc... and following the "rules" to a tee.

Am I a wimp or is this normal?

Thanks to anyone who can respond and happy healing to you all!

I am 4 weeks post-op tomorrow, but I tried to wean myself off of vicodin too soon in my first week. they should be giving you whatever you need to be pain comfortable in the 1-2 range at least. I would ask for a pain breakthrough drug or an anti-inflammatory as I had vicodin and naproxen for those first 2 weeks. The BM pain will pass as well. I also avoided constipation with regular doses of metmucil and senokot, but the BM pain was uncomfortable to say the least. If each day does not get better, I would call the doctor and talk through a comprehensive pain management plan

It is normal that one week out you still have strong pain. You are unfortunate in having contacted a Doctor who obviously is self righteous regarding drug use. I am assuming he prescribed anyway, and sorry he made you feel like crap.

Thanks you so much for your honest encouragement. I think I am pretty pain tolerant after 10 years of endometriosis pain, but I think you summed it up, he made me feel like crap.
I think we should remove his business through a tube and see how he feels :-)

I stopped taking the narcotic pain meds after the 5th day. You would probably benefit more from an anti-inflammatory type medication than just trying to kill the pain. But it is not unusual to have pain at 1 week. I would just hope it would not be at a 8/10 still. I hope you feel better soon!

Ouch! Sorry you are having so much pain. I came home from the hospital on a wednesday, and took percoset until the next friday--I took 2-3 percoset per day and ususally 2 doses of motrin 600 mg. so I was taking something every 4-6 hours. It worked really well--and I think the anti-inflammatory really helped the percoset work.

I used colase and miralax the whole time I was on percoset, and my BM's were not painful.

I had my TAHBSO on 12-22 as well. Today, 12-29, staples were removed. I left hospital on 12-23 and was taking Ibuprofen 800 mg every 8 hrs and Darvocet every 4 hrs; apparently overdosed on it (dizziness, nausea, vomiting). Take now only Ibuprofen twice a day... pain is worse but I prefer pain to vomiting....

Another problem for me - I don't sleep

I'm sorry to hear that I'm not the only one with pain. I've been so worried about getting addicted to the percocet that I haven't been taking enough. I haven't been good enough about the ibuprofen, but I'll make an effort to do that more. My body is still working on the first bowel movement, and that just seems to be pressing against the inflammation in the vaginal cuff. I'm pretty uncomfortable, but I think something's very slowly making some progress. (yes, TMI)

You could also ask them to change the percocet to something not as strong. Then you would not have to worry about that. Best wishes.
