In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Hello!
I have horrible pain -- my right ovary is always throbbing or it feels like my stomach is 'bleeding' inside at times. It has always felt this way when I come to think of it.
I was out shopping with my husband yesterday, and got so sick at the store: stabbing pain in right ovary, sweats, bowel issues, pains shooting down right leg. It was awful and I could barely walk. I don't know how I'm going to make it until 4 weeks to have my surgery.
Also, I am absolutely TERRIFIED of the surgery. While my surgeon does about four Da Vinci hysterectomies per week (benign and cancer patients), I'm still horrified. I have bad allergies, asthma, sleep apnea and I'm overweight. I'm afraid of being put on a 30 degree angle for the surgery and scared that I will be under for 3hrs or more (my doc said approx. 2.5hrs). That's alot of time being on a breathing tube for someone who is VERY sensitive to anethesisa. Before you ask -- I do not want a spinal either.
I am about to chicken out of the surgery; but I know it has to be done. I will be having a pelvic MRI today in the late afternoon.
Please pray for me...I don't know if I can do this at all.
Thank you for listening!
~Chrys

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Hi Chrys,
Good luck with the MRI today hope it is helpful. I'm sure your doctor is aware of your medical history and sensitivity to anesthesia right? Have you discussed meeting with the anesthesiologist a couple of weeks before surgery to review your concerns and discuss options. I don't know for certain but seems like you should be able to have a choice of anesthesiologist, maybe you can check the bios of the docs in the department and choose the one you feel may be best for you?
Remember if they felt the risk would be too high they would not perform a da Vinci procedure. Would you be more comfortable having a TAH. Less time under but longer initial recovery.
Preparation is so draining both body, mind and spirit. Hope something I posted is a bit helpful
Hang in there

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Am I correct that Da Vinci's are a form of lapascopic hysts? If so, then you wouldn't be able to stay awake anyway. My anesthesiologist explained taht during any laparas. hysterectomies the patient has to have a general, something about the CO2 gas they pump the abdomen with and the pressure on the diaphragm or something.
Have you asked your doc. if you can get on a cancellation list or something to get it done faster? Maybe when you get closer to the surgery you can ask him about some xanax to help get you through with your nerves (I say closer to the surgery because it is habit forming so you don't want to take it long.)
Anyway, hang in there. And just keep remembering that horrible pain. I was very nervous about going under and I just had to keep reminding myself that it was the only good choice I had. I couldn't keep living in the pain I was in.

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Hi there Chrys. I haven't been to this site for a while and just got an e-mail reminding me it's been three years since surgery. Your post has also reminded me of the pain I used to be in. Surgery is very scary for anyone - all the unknown and will things be ok etc. It sounds like you are really suffering so think of this as a positive step to get sorted out and ease that pain! Easy for me to say now, but even though I was petrified at the time, I would do it all again if I had to. I am pain free now - had total abdominal hyster for endometriosis.
The Doctors and anaesthetists are the experts so you need to put your trust in them. If they weren't confident in sorting you out, I'm sure they wouldn't even be suggesting surgery.
Be strong and I wish you all the very best. Magpie1 x

Chrys,
It will be okay.
The waiting really is one of the hardest parts.
Talk to your doc. about your fears. Keep asking questions until you are satisfied with the answers.
For me, the pain before was putting my life on hold. I COULD NOT continue to live like that. I HAD to have the surgery.
Praying right now for you. Romans 8:28.

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Hi Chrys ~
I understand your pain and your concerns too! I said a prayer for you along with praying for everyone on here facing these same issues as we (you and I) are. And for all those who have faced them and come through and well - EVERYONE here period .
I know another poster already asked you about this but this is what I would like to ask also - did they consider doing the abdominal surgery instead of the other at all? That was the "only" option I was given.
My surgery has been postponed indefinitely for now and I am a tiny bit relieved even though I am also upset about it at the same time. The relief is due to the fact that I know HOW to live my life in pain. I've been doing it for 18yrs now - the past 10 much worse than the first 8 and the past 2 so bad that I have no quality of life any longer - but at least this is something that I am familiar with. The surgery is an "unknown" to me and that's almost scarier than living with this unrelenting pain. Does that make any sense? I hope so.
Hang in there and please don't hesitate to talk about your fears. I know getting to talk with everyone on here has truly helped me. And always remember you're not alone!!
God Bless ~

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Thank you for all of your kind replies. I do appreciate it. Last night, I had horrible nightmares. This is crazy.
I don't know if I can switch to having an abdominal procedure in the fact that my surgeon said that the Da Vinci for me would be best because I had Urethra surgery last summer and he said it would be best go to in via laprascope (DaVinci) to see everything. He also wants to test my bladder while in there and inject it w/dye to see if it will work properly.
Right now -- my uterus is fused together. I no longer bleed because of the ablation in Dec. 07 -- however, due to the fusing (Asherman's Syndrome), I'm still in pain almost every day. My doc couldn't do my D&C on June 4th because there was so much scarring -- the hysteroscope could hardly get in and would only go so far. So...thus the decision for the hysterectomy. They can't get a biopsy sample and I want this thing out. I just feel that I am not going to make it thru.
On another note; I'm having personal issues w/my teen (18) and things were so bad that I was having suicidal thoughts (which I sought help for). For some reason, I keep thinking that since "I didn't want to be here on this earth", that my request will be granted via the surgery. I know it sounds stupid -- but it's the fear that I have. I guess I should be careful what I wish for.
Now...I'm a nervous wreck. Again, thank you for listening and I appreciate any support and prayers. I may just back out of the surgery -- but I know that I need it.
Prayers to all of you that are going through the same issues of fear.
Hugs,
Chrys

Re: In Pain and terrified of surgery scheduled for July 20th
Ah, never mind the xanax then. Can have a depressive effect, I believe. But glad you sought help. There are a lot of us with other issues besides problems with uteruses. ;-)
Look at the whole suidicidal thing from a spiritual view of "do you really have that much power anyway", by wanting to die, do you really have the power to get yourself to die during surgery? That power isn't in your hands. So it should actually be a relief. ;-) Let go and know what is and isn't yours to control. Scary, but again, a relief.
Take much care,

Chrys -
So glad that you are here and as you can see lots of people to support you here.
I had a daVinci procedure and you are put under for that, I don't think I had a breathing tube (throat wasn't sore); I think I just had a mask...ask your DR. I know I had a shot to do twilight when the were moving me in for my surgery, the wheeled me in and said "there's the machine, there's where the Dr. sits. Move from the gurney to the table, now move a little bit more." and the next thing I know I was in recovery...
I had a little bit of pain in my right upper arm from the CO2. like I had received a vaccination.
Talk to your DRs about all your concerns and when you need extra hugs post here.
Hugs and prayers.
G.
