I'm just a little surprised at how many of our men have discussed this with their coworkers. My DH told his boss and a couple of the guys he works closely with why he was taking off the day I had my surgery. He works in a rather small privately owned company so everybody knows each other's business. He said several of the wives of his coworkers have had hysters and they actually talked about it at work. Guess I just didn't picture a group of tool & die makers and engineers sitting around the break table talking about hysters.

I think they do talk to each other about it....maybe more along the lines of "Watch your step with her after they take her ovaries! Whew!!!!!" ...but not always My DH has relayed bits of conversations he has obviously had with his friends...and they have all asked about me...but it is a funny picture, isn't it...hairy guys discussing hysterectomies?

What do I tell male colleagues?
I taught natural childbrith classes for 6 years, so I got used to talking about sensitive anatomical information with men. My opinion is that if you use the real words, not made-up, cute, girly words when talking with male co-workers, it will garner more respect. Also, remember with the guys it's, "Just the facts, ma'am." They don't need or usually want all the gory details.

What do I tell male colleagues?
I work with many men in a sales department, and they have been more than supportive and understanding. I told them that I had a hysterectomy. I think letting them believe or think the "unknown" is worse. Although, in a group setting I'd probably tell them that I had some female issues that I needed to take care of surgically.

He did tell me that one of the guys told him to make sure I don't run out of patches. I think it's a hoot that they are discussing hormone patches!

What do I tell male colleagues?
I work in the ER so EVERYONE knows what went on with me. They are very open and up front about this stuff. If you're uncomfortable with telling them, just tell them you don't want to give details, or that it's woman stuff.

What do I tell male colleagues?
I did not have any trouble stating what type of surgery I had to friends, co-workers, or my boss. But when asked by someone whom I did not know that well, the response was "abdominal."
This was easy. The hard thing was telling my male boss what was wrong when I started missing so much time from work before surgery.
I did, and he was very understanding.

What do I tell male colleagues?
I too work in a male environment and just straight out said that I am having a hysteremectomy (I have been having "female" surgeries since 15 so no embarrasement there) and found the older ones to be very understanding and the younger ones to be um, er, ok. I work for a small company & everyone knows what happened - because I was looking forward to it! To the new people when I get back, I will "assume" that they know that I was out on medical leave and just leave it at that.
I think our men are more open with other men because they tend to all be a little embarrased to admit that they dont understand the female internal parts! My DH just started a mechanical construction company in Jan so the timing wasnt all that great, but his partners have been great, and some of the field guys that we both know (we use to work together for a mechanical/electrical contractor) that have joined the new company know and send their best wishes home with him. I think a lot of them are scared about menopause - I know mine is! Hehe. Hopefully the HRT i am taking will make this a smooth transistion. This was a great thread to read!
