Wow, does EVERYBODY know I'm having a hyster? (sorta rant)

Today's my last day at work. Actually my last half day at work...I'm leaving for my pre-op at one. I told my co-workers (all four of them...a whopping number) and the building HR manager who helped me calculate my leave hours about what type of surgery I'm having. I told them not to spread it around because while I'm by no means modest I just don't think it's anybody's stinkin business.

This morning I'm getting in the elevator and I get a hug from a female co-worker wishing me well and telling me to try to enjoy the time off work even though I'm going to be in "soooo much pain." So I brush it off because she's nice and we're kind of close and I think, "Hrm maybe I told her and forgot."

No...apparently the whole flippin building knows from the IT guys to the facilities guy to the intern. Now I'm being inundated with "helpful" advice and horror stories. Just what I wanted. Thank you ever so much!

*eye twitch*

I'm just gonna sit here at my desk with my headphones on and tie up my lose ends and think about revenge. Because the irony in all this is we work in a health care setting and guess what annual training we all just had to do. Lemme think....could it have been HIPAA?! The further irony is I manage the online trainings for this whole hay ride...I am SOOOOOO TEMPTED right now to slap HIPAA back on everybody's learning plans with the note, "Since you obviously didn't read this the first time and let the entire building know about my medical condition YOU GET TO DO IT AGAIN!"

That would show them! Not very professional, that's for sure. I am a teacher, so I sure don't go telling all my students I am having a TAH/BSO... there's just some things they don't need to know. And I don't think the students want to know, either! Good luck next week - see you on the other side.

Snoopy Aww sweet revenge! LOL I am so sorry that this got out more than you intended. That really sucks. Maybe you could think of ways to creep the guys out at your work or have them do things for you that you really do not need them to do. Sorry but I would just take advantage of the situation. I'm a little twisted though and I may not be giving good advise since my surgery is Monday and I am obsessed with this site right now. LMAO
Good luck to you at pre op and let us know how it goes!

LOL maybe you should!

Sorry it got out more than you wanted, this is why I just decided to be open about it, it really cranks me up when interoffice gossip makes its way around to me.

Ditto! Ditto! I work at a school and only told the teacher and other para I work with and asked them to keep it to themselves. I was nervous enough and did not want all the "attention" or hear others war stories or their neighbor's sister's girlfriend's great-aunt.

Having them take the HIPPA course again is a great idea since it is true that they didn't get it the first time around.

I was very open about my surgery....but it would only get out to 25 people...not a very big office. I think everyone is pretty upset with me...only two of them wished me luck with my surgery! Oh well....

Hope all went well with your pre-op!

My reasons for having surgery were different because I have Lynch Syndrome. I decided to talk about it because there is no shame in having surgery and many many people have had it. It is also a time when you can educate people. But I totally understand your frustration about people spilling the beans being upsetting.

Re: Wow, does EVERYBODY know I'm having a hyster? (sorta rant)

My dh and I told very few people, just a need to know basis. But my parents then told several people, which annoyed me. We didn't even tell my in-laws, since they live far away and would only have worried. But my 9 year old ds emailed them that I was home from the hospital (we forgot to ask the kids not to tell people). So now my mother-in-law seems hurt that we didn't tell her. I found the whole thing very annoying. Seems like it is impossible to keep something private these days.
