Should I have my ovaries removed??

I have been diagnosed with adenomyosis and my doctor is recommending a hysterectomy and removing my ovaries also. I will be 37 in a couple of weeks and think I would like to keep my ovaries if possible but I have extreme fatigue the week before and the week of my monthly cycle. My doctor seems to think that removing my ovaries would fix this. I am really nervous about this and have been trying to research my options. I found this site and decided to post and see if I can get some help. I really don't want to have to start on hormones if removal of my ovaries are not necessary. If it will fix the extreme fatigue I am willing because I am in the bed during this time. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who has had these symptoms and kept their ovaries or had them removed. My sister had a hysterectomy a few months back and is having a terrible times with the hormones now. I know everyone is different but would like some input before surgery which is scheduled August 31.

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

I am also 37 and my doc suspects adeno as well. I most certainly want to keep my ovaries and he knows that. If you truly do have adeno, I think removing the uterus will take care of it, not the ovaries (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong anyone!). I would suggest doing some googling/research and continue to ask the "experts" on this site. Good luck and WELCOME!

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

If it's adeno only, the ovaries should be fine (and remain!). I'm 31 and facing the same diagnosis, and most certainly want my ovaries. Do you have a family history of ovarian cancer, or any cysts, etc that has him believing this would be the best choice? Or is it simply the fatigue?

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

Thank you so much for the replies. There is no cancer in my family that I am aware of other then my dad's mother had breast cancer when she was older. My doctor just said he highly recommended it to keep down any probs that might arise in the future. My doctor thought I had endemetrosis but did the ultra sound and determined that I had adenomyosis and that my uterus hadn't closed up. My main concern is extreme fatigue 2 weeks out of the month. I homeschool my 4 children and run a home based business. I have had to hire help because I am in the bed a big part of this time. I feel that I have reached the end of my strength. It takes effort and strength just to talk. I appreciate everyones help.
I am really trying to find out if the fatigue is due to the ovaries not producing as they should, which is what the doctor suggested. It is not that I am doubting the doctor, I just need to know if that is the reason for the fatigue. Can I take a natural supplement to help the ovaries produce as they need to and keep my ovaries?

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

Fellow homeschooler, here! Though I do not have a business, I can tell you that the homeschooling alone -- at times I worry that I'm failing my children because I don't have the energy to do those things which I would like to. Our homeschool doesn't look much like what I envisioned it - but they're thriving, so I can't complain too much. My consult is Sept 9 - after your hyst - but that's definitely a question for me to remember to ask my doctor. I had always assumed that the low iron from the heavy cycles + adeno + fibroids were the cause of the fatigue.

It would really stink to find out after the fact that the ovaries WERE the cause of the fatigue, and they were left in place, wouldn't it??

What did he mean about your uterus "not closing up" ??

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

Hi, I was in the same boat. I am 32 and had ONLY my uterus removed. I kept my cervix as well as my ovaries in hope to prolong the start of menopause. My doctor suggested it as well but I did adequate research and wanted to keep them and she did and to her i am obliged. I would say do more research and make the best decision for YOU...

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

Also I might add, I too had extreme fatigue and was always tired. I am anemic and would lose a lot of blood each month. I wasn't on iron and as a result passed out prior to surgery and had two blood transfusions. Since having the SAH, I have enery of a child. I am more at ease and am just now enjoying what life is meant to be...

Absolutely. Don't make a life-altering decision based purely on message board advice.

And can I say - "energy of a child" sounds HEAVENLY. I can't wait.

It is AMAZING!!! I am up by 5am and not down again till around 11pm.. I use to get up at 6am and in bed by 8pm post surgery... But I believe we all have to weigh our options, what worked for me might not work for others. Having the SAH was the best decision I could have made.. NO REGRETS!!!

Re: Should I have my ovaries removed??

YAY!!! He is so patient with me - but I *KNOW* hubby feels that I'm a bit lazy at times. There are days when I can barely roll out of bed, accomplish nothing, request that he bring home dinner, and I'm ready for bed by 9. He works 50-60 hr weeks, sleeps 4 hours a night. I try that, and I'm a zombie for a month, lol. How soon did you notice an increase in energy?
