Scheduled for 1-3 and wanting to back out

Heathy, very active 52. Asked for CA125 after getting THE email. Elevated to 95. Shrinking complex cyst and fibroids. Surgeon recommends total hysterectomy to rule out ovarian cancer. No other blood tests done. 2nd opinion says there are alternatives. My gyn says lesser surgery doesn't meet "standard of care". Reading about the long recovery time, effects (hair loss, etc) is terrifying to me. Should I explore the lesser options.

If cancer is even suspected, get a consult with a gyn/onc. They have added training for this situation. They know what to look for and what to do. Have you had a CT scan, transvaginal ultrasound?

The only way to definitively diagnose ovarian cancer is surgery and pathology. A total abdominal hysterectomy is the route to go in case of suspected cancer as everything can be removed in one piece and it lessens the chance of leakage and therefore, spreading of cancer cells.

Take a look at the Cancer Concerns forums here and ask questions you may have there. The women are supportive and helpful
