Do I hormone test BEFORE surgery for baseline?

I love the way I think and feel (except for the excruciating backaches and abdominal cramps!) and I would like a baseline of hormone levels BEFORE surgery. I want to bounce back to my normal self.

Do I have a hormone test before surgery? Do I do blood or saliva, or both?

I went to the OB/GYN 2 days ago and had a sonogram, no huge uterus but my fibroids (largest size of golf ball) are getting bigger and because I have a tipped uterus they are pushing on my spine and bladder and giving me lots of constant pain, so I said take it all out, I can't stand the pain getting any worse!

OB/GYN called today and I go into surgery May 1--two weeks away! Have to act quickly: what do I do about hormone levels? I like who I am now!!!

Do I hormone test BEFORE surgery for baseline?

Hi Elizadoo,

I wouldn't push for any testing before surgery. Fibroids are usually caused by a hormone imbalance. So, the truth is that you probably don't want or need your hormones to be at the levels they are right now.

After my surgery, I was put on an estrogen patch right away before I even left the O.R. For a few months, your body will be using up any estrogen it has stored in body tissues. If you have problems with hot flashes or other discomfort, then sometimes the Dr will adjust your HRT to help you be more comfortable while your estrogen is leveling out. At about 4 months, my Dr made a change in the type of estrogen I was getting. It is common to take up to a year to find the HRT dose which is right for you. It took me about 2 years, but I have other endocrine issues that needed to be balanced also. Some women actually do quite well with what they are originally prescribed.

I was also afraid that this surgery would make me turn into someone I didn't like. The truth is, I am the same person I was before, except without the fluctuations of the monthly cycle. No more pms.

s and Best Wishes,
Kay
