Could polyps cause this much pain?

Hello! I had a d&c/hysteroscopy/biopsy yesterday, and while I didn't get a full report from the doc, she told my mom that she removed a large polyp.

I was wondering if a polyp could have been causing my symptoms, especially pain: heavy, frequent, bleeding, localized pelvic pain, lower back pain, and leg pain. I am 51 and thought I was menopausal, but the HRT I was taking seems to have jump started cycles. I discontinued HRT six months ago but still seem to be cycling.

On another note, the general anesthesia made me really, really sick. Even with zofran and phenergan, I vomited for 8 hours after surgery. I have had several surgeries with no problems, but something really didn't agree with me this time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Could polyps cause this much pain?

I had my hysteroscopy and d&c two weeks ago and also had a polyp removed. I was having really heavy bleeding but no pain associated with it (lower back and leg pain from diabetes though). My doctor thinks that the tissue she removed, including the polyp, should help stop the heavy bleeding. Right now I am still spotting from the procedure.

I had a hard time with the general anesthesia too...my doc had said I didn't have to have general so I wasn't expecting it. When I got to the hospital, the anesthesiologist (not the one I saw at the presurgery appointment) said I had to have general anesthesia because they were going to be tipping the bed so my pelvis was higher than my head, and it would be too uncomfortable to be awake for it. I almost put my panties on and went back home because I really didn't want the general anesthesia, but I decided to just get it over with. I woke up 8 hours later...apparently I had walking pneumonia which the chest x-ray and blood tests I had before the surgery had not been able to diagnose, and my primary care doctor didn't hear it in my lungs when I was there three days before the surgery. So when they took the breathing tube out, a lot of thick fluid came out and I didn't start breathing again on my own. I was on a ventilator for 4 hours before I started breathing again. I still have bruises all over my arms (apparently I was fighting them when they put the second tube down my throat, and they had to tie me up) but the bruises all over my neck are gone, so I can go out in public again.

At least I got my results already and the stuff they took out is not cancerous...the hyperplasia is gone also. So I guess it was all worth it, especially if getting rid of the polyp really helps with the bleeding.

When do you get your results?

Re: Could polyps cause this much pain?

Wow, you were really put through the wringer! Did you have any fever? I woud think your white cells would be elevate on the cbc, or that your lung sounds would be different, but perhaps nnot. I'm glad you came out of it okay! I would bet your family or whoever was with you was frantic! At least you gave the medical staff a good fight (just joking)!

So, I guess neither one of us will be in any hurry to undergo general anaesthesia again!

I am glad your biopsy came back noncancerous!

My post op appointment is in two weeks. By then, I will have a better handle on whether or not the pilyp was the source of my pain. Right now I am sore but don't have to take the pain medication, thank heavens. My bleeding has slowed down considerably today. Two weeks of bleeding seems really long! If it doesn't clear up in a few days, you might consider calling the doctor if you haven't already done so.

Re: Could polyps cause this much pain?

I wasn't sore the second day after my procedure, but I had some crampy pain in the days after that and it hurt to lay on my stomach (woke up crying once). I'm still too sore to ride my bicycle, I get about a mile from the house and have to come back home.

I had a very low fever...my temp is usually 97 and it was 99. They told my husband they couldn't hear the fluid in my lungs or see it on x-ray because I'm overweight. I have had other surgeries without problems though.

I have a follow-up on Monday, so if I'm still bleeding then I'll mention it to my doctor. It's not a lot of spotting. The doc said she did some resectioning also, maybe that's why the soreness and spotting have lasted this long.

Re: Could polyps cause this much pain?

Oh, resectioning; that explains the pain, bleeding and spotting. I hope your follow up appointment goes well.
