D & C with hysteroscopy scheduled

Hi, I am in the testing stage and will be heading into hospital for a D & C and hysteroscopy on the 25th of February because Endometrium biopsy was not successfull. Any encouragement or your own experiences would be helpful in how long for results or even the procedure info would be helpful.

Re: D & C with hysteroscopy scheduled

Hi I've had 2 D&C's and hysteroscopy. Both times I had spinal anesthesia which was good. The first time I was pretty much wide awake and watched the doc as she worked on the monitor screen. The second time I was a little ticked off because the nurse anesthetist gave me Versed and knocked me out. The whole reason for having the spinal was to be awake. If you don't want to be awake they will give you IV sedation.

If you are asleep or have a spinal and you have any hip issues, like arthritis, then ask them to be gentle when they position you on the or table. The first time, because I couldn't feel my legs to tell them they were hyperextending my hips, I had a lot of hip pain after. I just had a little cramping from the D&C itself, afterwards. During the procedure I felt nothing. I had a follow up apt with my doc the next week and got my pathology report at that time. Pathology usually takes about a week, depending on the size of the lab etc... In some situations the D&C is curative as well as diagnostic. For me it slowed the bleeding the first time but not the second time.

Re: D & C with hysteroscopy scheduled

Hey, Jezziebelle,

I've had the procedure done twice, both times with myomectomy. I was anesthetized each time, so unlike mollybear, I can't say anything about the actual process.

The results, however, were good for me. My bleeding had been heavy and/or continuous, and the procedure stopped it, except for some light bleeding and discharge that are expected after surgery. I had some cramps afterwards, and I was tired for a few days. Any pain I had was mild, lasted only for that first day, and was easily treated with Tylenol and a heating pad.

I saw my doctor about a week later, and he had the path reports by then.

You may be nervous, but don't worry too much. As far as procedures go, this is pretty mild. The day after my first one, I was picking peas in the garden, and the day after that, I went for a long walk and lunch with a friend. I think the worst thing I experienced was some constipation, from the anesthesia.

Take care and good luck.

Re: D & C with hysteroscopy scheduled

Hi Jezzibelle,

I just had my D & C with Hysteroscopy on Monday. This was my second time around and much different from the first. The surgeon and anesthesiologist decided what they were going to do and I was out from what they put in the IV and don't recall anything. At least this time though I didn't have a breathing tube or a catheter and that made a huge difference. There are options, discuss them with the doctor and the anesthesiologist and do some research too as to what would work best for you.
