Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

I haven't had surgery yet (11/16), but when I had my surgery Dec '08 (see siggy below) I was given dilaudid and Sabrina isn't kidding...it is strong.
God bless you on your surgery...praying for a swift recovery for you!
(((hugs))) to you!

Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

Honestly, as many sisters on the post op board will tell you, the pain from the surgery is not as bad as what many of us were dealing with on a monthly (sometimes more) basis. I was given an rx for darvocet and also one for ibuprofen 800; I only took the darvocet for 4 days, then moved on to the ibuprofen. Those soon got cut in half.

Everybody is different, but you may find you are overestimating the pain you will have.

Good luck and happy thoughts for an easy recovery.

Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

Too much of anything, it's good for anyone. I had a Da Vinci partial hyster on Oct. 13, and took my pain meds for 2 days. Then, cut my dosage in half for two day, then didn't need anything. I don't think you're going to wake up in the middle of the night in pain. if anthing, it will be from discomfort of sleeping on your back the first few nights.

Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

I only needed to narcotics for 3 days. After that the aleve did a good job of keeping pain tolerable. You maybe not be pain free but you should not be in that much pain after the first few days. I wish you the best.

Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

I know with me, when I do have a period (on TWO continuous BCPS to stop them) it is worse than anything I can compare it to. I went through an emergency induced labor with pit jacked up and my epi did NOT work and it was not nearly as painful as my endo. It was then that I realized I could do it (naturally which I ended up doing). Endo is the ONLY thing my drs have seen me cry in pain with. I don't know why you are having a hysterectomy, but honestly a lap is not that bad. Even with all the cutting my endo specialist said she would be doing, the worst parts were the 3 incisions I had. They were maybe a half inch each? I have been a very naughty princess as I did not do as my dr ordered each time. I continued carrying the baby around and stuff. Like I said, don't be worried about the pain. They give you pain meds before they even move you from recovery (HOORAY!!!). They give you a dose before they let you leave. Just make sure you stay on a fairly regular schedule and stay on top of the pain and it will be ok. I promise.

Re: Fighting With the Doc About Pain Pills

You will be fine.

I went into mine with delusions of screaming in agony with every movement and trip to the bathroom. I never had too much pain, granted I was uncomfortable at times (especially if I overdid it). But the pain generally was never any worse than cramps from aunt flo.

The first couple days home I kept pain meds on board 24x7 just in case and to keep on top of the pain. Getting behind the pain would be hard to fix. After about the third or fourth day I only took them at night because I flipped and flopped a little here or there and sometimes felt a twinge.

My husband threatened to grind up a percocet and put it in my breakfast he made for me if I didn't take it easy, that's how good I felt.
