My kids are getting nervous

I am scheduled for LSH on Feb 10 (and could end up having an incision because of my calcified cantaloupe fibroid). I have an 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter, and I share custody with my ex who lives 10 minutes away.

Since I won't know until I wake up what my incisions are, I am preparing to recover from an incision and not just laporoscopy. I have been telling my kids what is going to happen and arranged for them to be with their dad for 9 nights in a row. I told them we can watch movies and read books together, but that I won't be able to cook or clean or drive or get them ready for school. (I have a very supportive and wonderful significant other but we are not parenting each other's kids, although he will help my kids a lot too, just not 100%.)

Today in the car on the way to school my son got really mad at me and said he doesn't understand why we can't keep our regular schedule of when he is at my house. I explained again what I will likely be feeling like for a few days, but he continued to complain and then glared at me and would not hug me good-bye at school. My daughter ignored our conversation by reading out loud to herself, which is her common pattern.

Any suggestions about how to help them prepare? How much information? What is too much? My son does not like it when people are sick and he is probably getting nervous and expressing it by being mad at me. I tried to point out the positives - like this spring and summer I will be able to go swimming and camping whenever we want, and I won't have exhausting and painful periods anymore, but he just rolled his eyes.

Re: My kids are getting nervous

Your right about your son being angry so he doesn't have to show he's worried or scared. The same with your daughter reading her book and not responding. She is hearing you but doesn't know how to cope. You just have to reassure them that while you won't feel great for a few days, before they know it you will be fine and things will be normal. I'm sure that once you are home from the hospital, they will be a lot more cooperative because you are "safe". We have trouble coping so it is really overwhelming for kids to see their mom vulnerable. Hugs to you and your kids.
