question about removing steri strips
I got worried and freaked out about removing my steri-strips too soon. I called my doctor and she said as long as my incision was not coming apart, which scared me. It was still new, so it looked weird to me. I saw my doctor 4 days later, I think. Everything ended up being fine!

question about removing steri strips
thankfully that's all behind me now but honestly...it was horrid. I was just laying there that day and bawwooosh something musta torn and there was blood everywhere. The nurse had to apply tons of guaze pads and hold them for an hour until the on call gynie doc could come to my room. They had everything ready, sivler "sticks" and I thought...ok I thinks this is going to hurt and I kind of wanted to watch. But when the doc showed up and I saw all MY blood soaked bandages I couldn't. The student nurse said it was really cool though. lol It took three nurses to hold me down and I had put a pillow over my face to scream into and boy, big brave me sure did scream. The one nurse was saying "squeeze my hand I've had this done, I know your pain" and I just couldn't as I was afraid I'd break her hand off. It hurt like **** The whole thing took 10 or 15 mins. She said it wasn't the incision...it was a layer underneath and a blood vessel that likely didn't get sewn up good enough and that I should be AOK then after. On the day of my release, now a day later than planned, I was ordered up and to shower by myself which I thought was odd but I wasn't too keen on someone in there with me anyhow so I weakly stood in the shower and washed a bit of me and it felt good. Then I stood and was talking to my g/f on the phone and I looked down and the was blood splashing all over the floor ... again. So I buzzed nurse and thought...oh no here we go again. She held bandages on again til doc got there and by then the bleeding had stopped with pressure and she didn't feel the need to cauderize again. (thank God). Hours later I was sent home with tons of 4x4's and this really cool stretchy pressure bandage around my whole tummy with instructions to remove it the next day. I was terrified I'd blow open once home but thankfully that didn't happen.
I didn't want to go without steri strips but the one's on my incision were all caked with blood and I thought that can't be good and will give me an infection so that's when I asked dear b/f to see if drug store had anything. I reapplied new steri strips every few days until the incision looked ok enough that it would hold together. Thankfully it all worked out. I don't wish that pain on anyone though. Yikes. I can't imagine what that pain must be like for the poor women here that I've seen that have to have that done vaginally!!!! My heart goes out to you all !!!
My incision is doing good but that one spot will definately be a much much wider scar when all is said and done. But I don't care...so long as it heals.
and that's enough of my little tale....
Thank goodness we're designed to not remember the pain we feel down the road. That was by far the most horrid physical pain I've ever felt and pray I'll never have to go through anything like that again. It was all so odd though as my doc said I didn't bleed much at all during surgery which made it go very well. The boneheads though almost lost me in recovery though. I had some good nurses and some terribly bad ones and my recovery nurse wasn't paying attention and thought the blood she saw was vaginal but it wasn't. I remember saying to her...I feel real wet and when she got off her butt to look...she freaked because it was that part of the incision just gushing all over. They told me I will forever be known as the one that kept blowing open and it's funny because yup, it was on my chart and every nurse had a giggle about it all with me. People say I should sue but it doesn't work that way here in Canada so I have chalked the whole thing up as a learning experience for me and for them. My hospital is a teaching hospital so I guess I gave the students a good experience. Hopefully they will have learned from it.
ok...sorry so long....fingers are bored today so getting some excercise typing...
apply strips or butterflies or whatever makes you feel better. Those little strips became my security blanket and helped my mind deal with the trama. Do whatever works for you for sure !!
Best of healing to us all.
hugs
