10 hours post hysterectomy 1/26: Stay or go home....? UPDATED - stayed the night

I had a hysterectomy 10 hours ago. It was vaginal, laproscopic and robotic. After some meds, I feel ok... On Norco... I was able to urinate and pass all parameters to go home. However, I have heard the first 24 hours can be tough. I have the option of stay overnight. Been receiving excellent care. Hubby thinks I want to "pamper" myself if I stay...I'm worried I will have a rough night and would rather be here if I do... Any advice?

Re: Stay or go....

I am of the stay opinion. I liked having the nurses available, I liked having the help if I needed it, and I wanted all of the anesthesia out of my system AND my pain controlled before I left. My doctor recommended I stay, my nurses practically insisted.

And heck yes, you deserve a little pampering after the trauma your poor body has just been through. Husband's point is?

Rest. Be well.

Re: Stay or go....

I wanted to go home as soon as possible, but I'd been there two nights before my surgery for blood transfusions. The night of my surgery I had a lot of pain and had to ask for additional meds. I had an abdominal cut, so I'm not sure of the difference in what you may go through. Honestly...I'd say if you feel comfortable staying and if your insurance covers it, your husband can handle one night by himself. I've found the hospital is hardly pampering. There's noise and lights going on all night long and they wake you up to take your vitals. If you have a roommate, there are double the interruptions. The only reason to stay is to be sure you're okay.

Re: Stay or go....

Oh! I also had breathing problems due to being intubated. I was so glad I was there and being monitored, because the pulmonologist came in and helped get me breathing right and my blood pulse ox back up.

I had a solo room, and besides the pulmonologist coming in and waking me to get me breathing, I wasn't bothered at all.

Re: Stay or go....

I would say stay. I felt pretty good until about midnight when I started feeling nauseous and began throwing up. Not fun. The nurse was able to inject some medicine into my iv that helped a lot. By the next morning I was great and went home with no problem.

10 hours post hysterectomy 1/26: Stay or go home....? UPDATED - stayed the night

I opted to go home 12 hours after my LAVH. I was told by doc i could stay or go home. At 10 hr mark I decided to have hubby fill pain prescription and then went home. I was nauseated the whole time in hospital and once i was out in fresh air, it passed immediately. For me, there was no reason to stay. Husband took great care of me all night, food was better at home, I was more comfortable at home too. Completely up to you though!

Re: Stay or go....

Aww, go ahead and stay! I woke up in the middle of the night with a "When and where am I?" episode. The after effects of the anesthesia made me believe I'd not had surgery yet! Bed alarm going off and everything. Nurses got me dressed, and one helped me walk the hall while the other got my bed back in order. I asked the nurse helping me what time it was, she said "12:45". Even though I could see out of the window at the end of the all that it was pitch dark, I asked "In the day?" I'm glad I stayed! I was in no condition to return home.

I do hope your husband realizes how long this recovery takes, and that when you sleep for 10-12 hours, you need it. Steer him over to MisterHysterSisters.

Re: Stay or go....

I stayed , had a room mate who was troublesome and a loud guy who kept yelling, plus the constant night checks I cried a few times. I was ready to leave and cleaned myself without help by 7 am lol Do what you think is best, I hope you get some rest. I know I was thanking god when I got home had I had my OWN room would have been a completely different story though, I only got 2 hours sleep total but honestly the room mate situation was a nightmare I won't go into.

Thank you all so much for all the advice! I am staying and being "pampered" with cable TV, quiet and Vicodin.

It's not so bad if you have your own room. I had my own and entertained guests throughout the day! I actually slept through almost all of the night checks, even though I had a catheter and it was super unpleasant. Plus I had all kinds of weird questions and concerns that were popping up as I thought of them. It helped having nurses and doctors right there. Definitely pamper yourself tonight, you deserve it!
