TAH 6/22 - Still Nausea's & Vomiting

Caring for my 75 year old mom (I registered under her name). She had her surgery on 6/22 and is still nauseus and vomiting (just bile). She isn't eating because she feels so bad. They discharged her today. Is this normal? She had back surgery 7 months ago and had similar but not as severe problems.

Any reponse is appreciated.

A lot of pain meds cause nausea and I had nausea with them after my surgery. My doctor gave me a script for an anti-nausea med, but the OTC Emetrol anti-nausea liquid was enough for me. Call the doctor for an anti-nausea script or try Emetrol if the doctor approves.

I don't know if that is normal, i only had nausea in the hospital, but i do know give her peppermint or spriment tea, it helps so much promise!!

Is she producing gas and was she able to have a BM? If not, I would call her doctor (do it in any case). They should be able to give her something for the nausea and determine whether there is something else going on (you also don't want her to get too dehydrated).

I say that because the same thing happened to me (nausea, throwing up bile, not being able to eat, stomach distended...), and it turned out that my intestines hadn't awakened yet (I had what they called an ileus).

Fortunately, I was still in the hospital when this happened, so I was kept until I could produce gas, a BM, had bowel sounds and could keep down food.

Good luck with your mom...and I would definitely contact her physician.

I had a similar issue caused by the narcotics they gave me in the hospital. They switched me to ibuprofen and gave me meds to deal with bladder spasms, gas, and nausea. Within about 6 hours I felt like a new person. Make sure to let her doctor know so they can help her out. Good luck to you both!

You need to contact her doctor....hopefully they will have some answers for you...I can see how she could heal properly being this sick.

I am 2 weeks post TVH and have nausea from the pain meds I am on. I have to take strong pain meds because I have a high tolerance... my doc said it is normal and has prescribed phenergan to help... and it has. I would just call her doctor's nurse, they should be able to help you over the phone. Best of luck and blessings.

Thank you all for your responses. They are very helpful. She's still getting sick, but at least she's talking about food now. We will contact her dr. tomorrow.

The general keeps me sick for over a week. I've gone under 3 times for surgery and everytime had the general keep me sick for days and days. I have to take a very strong anti-nausea pill everytime.

Since she's newly released, did the hospital give you contact phone numbers that you can call now? My doc even gave me his cell phone # in case I needed him afterwards. I just hate to think her sick constantly, because I was there last night until the phenergan kicked in... for about an hour and that was a rough hour. Someone did recommend mint, but what about ginger? That is something I took with morning sickness. Just some thoughts, again, hate for her to feel sick, it's no way to recoup. Blessings.
